    You will know whether it's OK to eat or not as soon as you open it.
    As a general rule I ignore the date and go for the smell test.

    Why chuck away good food because of the date a supermarket put on it? Supermarkets lust love people who will throw away perfectly good food and then replace it with more, they make a fortune from use by dates.

    Did anyone watch a programme called 'The People's Supermarket' sometime over the weekend/this week?

    It's a chef who is appalled at how the main 4 supermarkets charge for basic foodstuffs and throw away food that's not been sold and is at it's sell by date.

    Well he got a group of people who live by supermarket skip salvaging, and to make his point, he trawled the supermarkets with this group to find enough 'out of date' and 'thrown away' food to make a 5 course meal - for which he charged something like £120 per person:eek: to make his point. He even found a case of wine which was thrown away because the label was torn!!!!!

    Apparently, the food was very good and no-one complained (they had a choice of the salvaged food menu or a fresh restaurant menu and they all chose the salvaged food one.)

    So I would go for the smell test and trust your own judgement. If it's been in the fridge all the time, I'm sure it would be ok. Before the supermarkets took over selling everything, we used to buy the weekly shop from the butchers/greengrocers and nothing had a sell by date on it, we had to just test it as we went along - and at 58 years old - I'm still here to tell you the tale!
  • Smell test! It doesn't go off overnight, and supermarkets have to be over cautious.

    Trust me, you will know if it's gone off... and then I would NEVER feed it to the cat... it'll make them very poorly x

    I have bought thighs for as long as I can remember but last night asda had boxes and boxes and boxes of breast fillets reduced for £1 for 4, so I bought 20 (fillets not boxes!)! They are now individually wrapped and in the freeze but I would love some ideas for ways of cookign them so they aren't horribly dry - don't like them in curry as thighs are so much better there but open to other ideas.....

    Do you like Asian cusine? Lots of recipes using chicken breasts. Ramen bowl noodle soups are great for chicken as the liquid doesn't allow it to dry out.

    Stuffed chicken breast with mozzarella or Philadelphia is delicious.

    Well it's the most expensive part of the chicken for some reason. People must like them. I don't like it much as you say always ends up dry. I'd say anything that is quick to cook like a stir fry might be best. Maybe baked in oven with a tomato and onion based sauce surrounding it keeping it moist.

    Hi rachbc,

    Like you I prefer chicken thighs but they are good wrapped in bacon and oven cooked as it helps to stop them drying out.

    i use them for a curry but only cook in the slow cooker and they come out perfect!!!.
    stir fry
    chicken brest for sunday dinner
    casserole
    god the list is endless
    cooking in a slow cooker makes them taste soft and defo not dry
    Trying to make big cut backs!!!
