  • Hi This is my first post so please be gentle with me!!!!

Just spoke to Sainsburys Careline freephone 08006362632. As I was advised to after calling 2 branches to try and track one of these digiboxes down. The very helpful opearator explained that this was a pre Christmas offer that ended on the 5th January. There were none available on the system so she was unable to trace any and this meant there were none available in any store in the country. I hope this helps anyone trying to track one down. thanks to Archna for the original posting and the lifting of my spirits however short.

sorry to sound thick but does freeview improve reception? we cannot get terrestrial channels here without a satelite dish

No. If you can't get the standard analogue transmissions, then you can't pick up Freeview.

The Freeview signals, currently much weaker digital transmissions until the full changeover in each region, piggyback on the analogue signals.

Secondly you need to be aware that there is an upgrade from Teletext Extra which happens when the box is on standby. If the box is NOT one of the newer ones this can cause problems (freezing and non-reception), in which case you need to return the box to default settings. Read the manual. Teletext Extra are also helpful. For cheap Freeview that is a small price to pay if necessary. And I won't pay anything to the pay-view empire, so it suits me. Highly recommended to risk 9.99 for Freeview.

Good points, Silvergirl. The obligatory upgrade from Teletext Extra happens every time one turns off the digibox - which in my case is every night (because I try to save energy by avoiding "standby" buttons). So, each evening when I turn on my digibox I have to wait about five minutes before I can watch anything (the upgrade cannot be done while you are watching TV). In other words, it takes longer for my 2008 digibox system to warm up than it did for my grandparents' TV system in 1957!

I don't want to join the "pay-view empire" either but, please, please, does anyone know of an inexpensive digibox that doesn't require daily upgrades from that nuisance Teletext Extra (which I don't find useful)?

    Don't you just go ....

MENU >>> CONFIGURATION >>> EPG PREFERENCE

... and change it to 7 DAY or NOW/NEXT (and NOT TELETEXT)

... to turn it OFF ?

I have the update message when I switch on (don't leave on standby overnight) every day but if I press <x> within 30 secs it goes away.
  • I would advise getting one that has the 'red button' interactive thingy. The cheap ones don't mostly have that

  • Sainsbury's website shows the Bush box at £24.99.

They also stock the Red Box. Has anyone tried this one and is it any good.
  • Hi skint,

Sainsbury's press office has confirmed that this offer is available so unfortnately the Customer Careline has been giving out the wrong info. Stock is limited though so you'll need to grab one quick if you can find one near you.
