Bush Freeview box £9.99 in Sainsburys

11 March 2008
What's the deal?

Sainsbury's is selling a Digilogic freeview box for under a tenner, nationwide in selected stores only.

How many are available?

Sainsbury's has said there is a reasonable amount in stock, but when they're gone, they're gone, so get in quick. The offer will last until stock has sold out.

Update Note 11am 14th March: Contrary to some postings below, there are still a few stores stocking this freeview box, though they may be far between. Thus, be sure to give them a ring to check if it's in stock before you make the trek. Sainsbury's store locator.

Any Alternatives?
  • Bush SCART Freeview Adaptor, £9.95, limited stock (membership required)

Richer Sounds, the quirky discount hi-fi shop, is offering a Bush SCART adaptor with freeview built in (so there's no actual 'box' involved) for a rock-bottom £9.95, but there's a (tiny) catch.

To qualify for the cheap deal you must join the chain's 'VIP Club', which you can do online or in-store for free, else you'll pay £39.99. Again it's best to phone around to check availability. Richer Sounds Store Locator.
What's the cheapest online?

Not quite as cheap but you can pick up one from Dixons for £15 including delivery. Post below if you spot one cheaper.

What is Freeview?

It's a terrestrial digital box - in other words you simply plug it into your normal TV aeriel and you can get a lot more channels - over 40 more and you never need pay another penny (plus a whole host of digital radio stations too).

Check you can receive digital TV first

The official way to check whether you can get the signal is on the official site: Freeview. Yet that test's not fool-proof, so ask nearby neighbours for their experiences or if possible borrow someone's Freeview box to try.
If you nab one of these, please report which store by clicking reply

Which store out of interest? They might be only in one store? Must be the cheapest price I've ever seen.

We bought a cheap Bush Freeview from Sainsbury's a while back and it's been fine. Two points: firstly when checking the Freeview site we were told 'not in our area', however we could get terrestrial Five vaguely so I reasoned that we were at the edge of the transmission area (high up on cliffs in South Devon), so took the chance, result was we could receive up to 107 channels with very little problem. So DO check, it's worth it because you might be in the same sort of area.

Secondly you need to be aware that there is an upgrade from Teletext Extra which happens when the box is on standby. If the box is NOT one of the newer ones this can cause problems (freezing and non-reception), in which case you need to return the box to default settings. Read the manual. Teletext Extra are also helpful. For cheap Freeview that is a small price to pay if necessary. And I won't pay anything to the pay-view empire, so it suits me. Highly recommended to risk 9.99 for Freeview.

I have tried Clapham, Nine Elms and Dulwich and they are not selling it. Any other ideas?

4 kids with a TV in each room = 4 boxes. Else they can't watch anything when we switch over soon.

    Parents need 2.

    Neighbour wants 2

We all need them as soon Cornwall will be switched off.
