Using a carrier bag to line kitchen bin?

Like most people I no longer accept plastic bags when I go shopping, so I'm running out of carrier bags to line my kitchen bin. I was thinking I'd have to buy some bin liners, when it dawned on me that the rubbish that goes in the kitchen bin is mostly packaging, and is therefore dry so why does it need to go in a bag before going in the wheelie bin? I recycle anything I possible can so there's no veggie peeling or food waste in the bin. Anything messy can be wrapped in newspaper and be put straight into the wheelie bin.

I'm having the same problem, running out of carrier bags to line the bins! But I point blank refuse them in a shop.
Would be good to see what suggestions are made on this thread.

Do most people refuse to accept plastic bags?
I find lots of uses for them, especially with a fortnightly refuse collection.
I do take care that I don't let the whales and turtles eat them!0 -
Just received the refuse collectors calender for 2008.
An accompanying letter wanted to know if i have room for another bin (for glass) making 4 in total. The letter also mentioned that dry recyclables could be put straight into the bin.
What are all the doggie owners going to do when plastic bags are banned?
The bins make good rain butts.0 -
We've stopped using carrier bags as bin liners - now we just line the bottom of the bin with newspaper and wrap anything yucky up in newspaper before putting it in.
We've been doing it for about 6 months now but it took us ages to start because I thought it would be too yucky! :eek:0 -
We used to manage pre plastic bags, was only a child but anything yucky was wrapped in newspaper, we did have coal fires then though so things could be burnt and a weeky bin collection, ours in fortnightly now.0

No wheelie bins here but I use the good old fashioned black dustbins. I now have 2 outside that I use differently. I have one which any dry packaging goes straight into with no extra plastic bags. I then use a bin liner for my smallish kitchen bin for the messy stuff. All veggie peelings go on compost heap. Cardboard, tins and glass are recyced. The net result is that I have used 2 bin bags all week instead of the usual 10 or so. And I haven't got everyone fully trained yet as I've only started doing this recently. So "dry" things still ended up in there. The dustbin men emptied the bin no problem and it did not get smelly etc. Whilst I would like to reduce waste even more, there are things I cannot do without that create waste. I am considering buying the more expensive biodegradable "vegetable" bin bags if I continue to use as few. Could not afford to before but prepared for the cost if only using one or two. But not sure how good they are. I won't put any rubbish in the bin that isn't bagged and tied up. It might consume plastic bags, but there's a trade-off. Rubbish that blows and falls out of bins creates a lot of litter, and lots of rubbish also blows out of landfills.0

I save bags that junk mail comes in-if its strong enough and food bags from potatoes, apples etc for this purpose.0
