And for anyone reading this far, add Post No 32 to the lists of posts with good advice.

Does anyone know if the 55 cm is just for the body of the suitcase or the whole thing. I bought one from Matalan which said it was 50 cm to err on the side of caution but when I measured it it actually measured closer to 58 cm. the same with the Tesco one mentioned above which says it is 50 cm but in fact is more like 58 cm - at least the poster has used it on ryanair before so presumable I should be safe.
You should be OK. I imagine gate staff will let through with dimensions up to BA allowance, which is 56x45x25cm - So I can't see them worring if one dimension is just slightly over
However if you get 'Jobsworth' you could be sent back to check the bag in. 0 -
check out Tesco's, the labels on their luggage has the sizes printed on - it also suggests whether they are suitable for hand luggage
the ryanair website says 55cm x 40cm x 20cm and 10kg
we got bags from tescos that fitted that size, quite cheaply.I often think about The Samuel Vimes 'Boots' Theory Of Socio-Economic Injustice. :cool:0 -
excellent moneysaving post about tescos cheap bag , thats what the forum is all about questions and help
im not sure why all the been on the forum years brigade and seen the answer to the questions so many times before gets so irate cos someone dares to ask the question again, just ignore the thread and let those who want help get it
what bag to reccomend finally gets answered with a few suggestions, whats the problem0 -
whats the problem
The problem has been explained quite succinctly in post #26.
If I bought a bag on someone else's recommendation, didn't bother to check the actual dimensions with a tape measure (despite what the label might say) and then the bag was refused as hand luggage whose fault would that be?
As far as money-saving goes, I daresay that anyone who nips down to their local market on a weekend, armed with details of the Ryanair sizes, a tape measure, a fiver and an ounce of common sense could purchase something suitable, and be back home in time for tea and medals ;0)0 -
incapuppy, thats exactly what i will do, pop down to tescos and a have a look, and if its suitable then the poster who reccomended it should get a medal
it could save trawling through my local market or god knows how many shops armed with a tape measure
well done for reccomending a bag, despite doom and gloom associated with such comments0 -

I hope you don't forget tojo ralphs's advice that handles, wheels and expandability often take you over the 'advertised' size of the bag plus melb's advice that she has measured this bag and it is actually is more like 58cm, so a 'jobsworth' could well make you check it in.
Another point to consider is that at 2.8 kg it takes a nice chunk out of your hand luggage weight allowance - not a big deal if you are taking hold luggage too, but if you are only taking hand luggage it could be more sensible to use a bag that is much lighter in the first place ;0)0 -
Ryanair have a very clearly defined hand luggage policy and opting to take hand luggage that is oversize on all three counts is simply asking for trouble IMHO.mystic_trev wrote: »I imagine gate staff will let through with dimensions up to BA allowance, which is 56x45x25cm, So I can't see them worring if one dimension is just slightly over

The OP started this thread due to their concerns with regard to others experience with Ryanair and what you choose to call the Jobsworth mentality.
In short, it is in an airlines interest to get as much luggage checked in as possible as the overhead locker space onboard most planes is always limited. Add to that the fact that Ryanair charge passengers for checked in luggage and it is not that difficult to understand why they might wish to request passengers stick to the rules.

I have also used a WH Smith carrier bag as hand luggage.
This must be the answer!
Cheap. Flexible so will easily fit in those wierd metal straightjackets they use as testers. Also has many other uses when away. Too many to list here. Unless it's too much trouble to Google 'uses for plastic bags'.
Now, can anyone tell me where I can get one of these?0
