Mattress advice please

Sorry to barge in here - but i nearly jumped for joy when i saw this thread (At least I would have if my back wasnt so ouchy!!:j)
Whats better... A mem foam mattress or a topper?? (i posted elsewhere but only had one reply)
I would really appreciate views either on here or by PM.
As long as they are good quality it is far better to buy a mattress with the memory foam built in. The pocket spring/memory foam gives the best support, and isn't as hot as the reflex/memory foam because the air can circulate under the memory foam.
There is a great deal of research and development goes into designing a new model mattress. All the components are chosen for their suitability to work together. If you just use a topper then it can be any mattress with any topper just plonked on top.0 -

I'd happily recommend Ikea mattresses to anyone
we bought a firm sprung mattress from there 8-10 yrs ago with a mattress pad to go on top
4 yrs ago we replaced the pad, the sprung mattress is still like new
after years of nursing I have 3 worn vertebrae, 2 flattened discs and have regular injections into my back for pain relief
the combination of a soft pad and a firm mattress has enabled me to sleep comfortably for many years and the quality is superbI am a Senior Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Wales, Small Biz MoneySaving, In My Home (includes DIY) MoneySaving, and Old style MoneySaving boards. Hope you don't mind me hijacking this thread also - we recently bought a new bed / mattress, but I'm getting backache because the mattress is too soft. Hubby loves it, but will change if needs be.
The mattress is described as "5cm of 55 Density Visco Elastic Memory Foam (depth 20cms)", it came vacuum packed and was bought on e bay - link here:

So my question is - can I do anything to make my side firmer? I like the memory foam, we had a topper over our last mattress before it died, and so I don't think that's the problem.
Grateful for any suggestions - it wasn't cheap and I don't want to give up on it without a fight!

I've had a read of the ebay listing, and to be honest if the bed is genuine leather, and is super king size, then many sellers will sell it for more than £549.95 without the mattress. So this along with the fact that it is a vacuum packed mattress tells me that it is probably very low quality. If it contains V55 memory foam then that shouldn't be a problem. The recommended range is 60 to 70, but the acceptable range is 55 to 80. So if it isn't a cheap import from China with very poor quality memory foam, then it could be a problem with the density of the reflex foam underneath.
If it has a removable cover, can you unzip it and have a look to see if there are two layers of foam, then let me know.0 -

Thanks Tim - I've just had a look, and there are two layers glued together. The top (5cm) layer is pink - presumably this is the memory foam part? The other 15cm is light yellowish, fairly soft foam.0 -
Our mattress is really hard to move - it's a tempur superking 25cm deep - so about as big and thick as you can get. It's heavier than a normal mattress, but even worse for trying to move it - it's squishy and has no rigidity! When we move house the removal men complained A LOT!!! ps do think it's fanstastic to sleep on though, and with Tempur you can get them VAT free if you have a bad back/other medical problem0

You have to be registered disabled, and the mattress has to be of benefit to your disability in order to not pay VAT. There are some sellers who can drop you right in it with Customs & Excise by knocking the VAT off for any back problem. Also it isn't just Tempur mattresses, it is any product that is designed to relieve any disability. So you could by other makes for a fraction of the price of Tempur.0 -

Push your hand down on the memory foam part. If it leaves an imprint for a couple of seconds after you take your hand away, then it is memory foam.
You say that the foam layer underneath is soft. This is probably your problem. Memory foam needs a good supportive layer under it otherwise it just won't give you the support it is supposed to.0
