are Ikea ones any good? As we have their bed so we need their mattress as we bought a normal size king sized one and its a little small on each side. Our mattress is nearly 4 years old and the coils are hurting my back already. (it's a sleepnight one)

    In a word NO.

If you go to an independent seller who deals with small independent manufacturers, then you should have no problem getting a huge range of mattresses in continental sizes.

I've got two momory foam toppers from ebay (a two and a three inch) and they are brilliant (and much cheaper than I've seen anywhere else). It's worth spending some time shopping around on there though as its a bit of a mixed bag.
I would say three inches is the best. They are pretty heavy but you could probably get away with a cheap mattress plus a topper and just move the topper for sleep-overs.
