Search this thread and there is a link for some Samsung unlock software which you can use with the cable that comes with the phone to unlock it for free.

Is it possible to get unlocking codes for Samsung phones? I can only find codes for Nokia. Its a SGH-E900 on Vodafone.

contact virgin they should be able to supply the unlock code as long as it is used and registered by you!

The thing I do remember is that after it had done the unlock, I had to remove and reinsert the battery to get the phone refreshed and working again.

Oh the other thing I had to do was run it on a rather old PC as I coul dnot find the comm port on my newish PC.
