I'm another who is not impressed with dysons. We have in fact just put our dyson animal on ebay because it does not pick up the cat hair at all. It just rubs it on the carpet into a clump, which then has to be picked up by hand. I'm now looking for a dyson replacement but unfortunately can't afford a Miele cat and dog, otherwise that would be my choice.

Out of curiosity is it the upright type with direct driven brushes or the cylinder version (with I guess air driven brushes if any)? I’m guessing the latter as I’ve never seen anything survive a pass with the brushes turned on with the upright model.

It's the upright type. Couldn't understand why it was so crap, but never mind, it's sold now. In case OP is still looking I have now purchased a Vax turbo 1700, on excellent reviews from the amazon website. Here's hoping it's fab as it sounds!
What did I do at work before I discovered MSE?!

DFD - WAS: a while ago

NOW - not sure, due to boyfriend going back to uni for masters and now pgce. Worth it in the long run!
Proud to be dealing with my debts!

An update from us too... Got the Dyson DC14 from JL on Friday (brilliant service as always), Monday night a little bit of plastic breaks and the wheel falls off

Not a big loss, the vacuum itself worked well but a pain to push around - so heavy and difficult to manoeuvre! Not to mention noisy! So I called JL, arranged for an exchange with a Miele which cost £85 less and from reviews I've seen virtually everywhere performs better than a Dyson.

Oh well, more fool me for believing the hype!

Can I ask what JL is please, and do you have a link?

I'm going to go for the Miele I think, can get it for £154 at some obscure online electrical retailer but still looking to beat that price!

That would be John Lewis. Not the cheapest of places but excellent customer service.

Sorry folks but I think the Dyson is cr*p!

I'm a proud owner of Bosch Formula Pro Pets Vacuum Cleaner. This came up in the top 5 in the Which? survey whereas Dyson came at the bottom!

I only paid £93 for mine from electricshopping.com.

ive not got a which? membership, but do you know what the top 5 vacuums are? (one being the bosch, but the other 4?)

    thanks!

Just wanted to add - JL isn't the cheapest BUT it is very competitively priced. For instance, the Miele S5210 I have just bought is £139 at JL and £135 at electricshop.com (both offer free p&p). I'm quite happy to pay those extra 4 quid for peace of mind!

    Hey bigup7,

I've cut and pasted the best buys from Which? Where are the Dysons?!!

First and foremost, excellent cleaning ability on at least one floor surface. Carpet is the hardest surface to clean, so any model that rates highly there is a strong contender.

Second, dust that's sucked in should stay in. Some models have poor filtration systems, which allow dust to escape back into the room through the exhaust, so our cleaning ratings take account of this, too.

Finally, we look at the brand's reliability record. Each year we survey 30,000 Which? readers to find out which brands' vacuum cleaners are least likely to require repair.

We don't make a product a Best Buy if its manufacturer has below-average reliability.

    Bosch BSG 71810GB Formula
    Price: £90
    Score: 66 %
This Best Buy cylinder model from Bosch is stronger on hard floors than carpet, but puts in an excellent cleaning performance and is good value for money.

It's a real star on wooden floors – laminates and floorboards alike – where it leaves virtually no dust behind. It retains dust well and, for a cylinder, it deals effectively with errant pet hair. However, its impressive performance on hard surfaces isn't matched on carpet – it's just ok.

    Bosch BSG72025GB Pro Pets
    Price: £110
    Score: 71 %
This Bosch Best Buy cylinder vac gives great results on wooden floors and doesn't disappoint on carpet and laminate surfaces, either. As its name suggests, it's a specialist pet model and is an excellent choice for cats or dog owners.

Thanks to the handy 'turbo' brush accessory (a rotating brush head), it's fantastic at picking up pet hair. It's also excellent at cleaning floorboards and leaves carpets and laminate floors pretty spotless, too.

    Miele S4510
    Price: £170
    Score: 71 %
This Best Buy Miele cylinder vac impresses across the board and has a range of superior features. It does a great job on all floor surfaces and sucks up pet hair a treat as well as being easy to use.

Features include an optional turbo brush head which helps the vac do an impressive job on all floor surfaces. It's great on carpets but first class on wooden or laminate floors, leaving them virtually spotless. Results in our pet-hair tests were good and it’s excellent at retaining allergens – perfect if either of these are a concern for you. You'll enjoy using this machine, too. Miele has added a new touch to this version: a specially shaped 'comfort' handle designed to take pressure off your wrist. Meanwhile, its compact size makes it one of the best we've tried on stairs and it's a cinch to empty.

    Miele S5210
    Price: £139
    Score: 69 %
The S5210 lacks fancy extras but still offers excellent all-round cleaning capabilities and is particularly good for allergy sufferers.

It's especially proficient on wooden and laminate floors but also great on carpet. As it's the most basic model in Miele's S5 series, it doesn't have fancy extras such as a turbo brush, but, nevertheless, it still does an ok job with pet hair. It's outstanding at retaining cat and dog allergens, so is a great choice if this is a concern for you. However, it's slightly bigger than the compact range and isn't particularly easy to manoeuvre. That aside, it's easy to use including on stairs.

    Miele S380
    Price: £99
    Score: 67 %
This is Miele's self-declared most basic cylinder vac but, with fantastic cleaning results across the board, it has all the brand's classic hallmarks.

With its bright 'corn yellow' colouring, the Miele S380 is certainly less subtly shaded and lacks the stylish revamped look of its brandmates, but that shouldn't detract from the fact that it gives excellent results on laminate and wooden floors and doesn't disappoint on carpet, either.

    Miele S4210
    Price: £119
    Score: 67 %
The Best Buy S4210 is a lightweight, easy-to-use cleaner that's great on all surfaces. Being a basic model, it doesn't have lots of extra features, but it's quiet, effective and reliable.

This is the entry-level model in the S4 range – it lacks the dusting brush accessory and comes with a standard, not a turbo, brush head. It's no slouch though: leaving laminate and wooden floors speck free and doing a good job on carpets, too. Its lack of turbo brush makes pet hair more of a challenge, but it does an ok job and copes better than many cylinders. What's more, it's the quietest of the Miele family. It's also excellent at retaining allergens – a brilliant choice if this is a concern for you.

    Miele Parquet & Co
    Price: £149
    Score: 66 %
Although this easy-to-use Best Buy cylinder vac is designed for wooden floors, it's great on carpet, too, and copes fine with pet hair so is far more versatile than its name implies. Another great cleaning performance from a reliable brand.

It includes a separate brush, with soft rollers and brushes designed not to damage delicate surfaces, for cleaning parquet floors. It leaves laminate and wooden floors spotless and speck free and doesn't disappoint on carpet, either.

    Sebo Felix 1 Premium
    Price: £229
    Score: 64 %
The main strengths of this Best Buy Sebo vac are cleaning laminate floors and dealing with pet hair. It's quirky looking, but ignore its unusual exterior as this upright vac's internal workings are pretty impressive.

The retro-looking Sebo Felix 1 Premium has carpet-sweeper looks firmly stuck in the 1950s. It's excellent at picking up dust from laminate floors, ok on carpet, but disappointing on floorboards. It's a real star at cleaning pet hair from carpet and pretty effective at retaining allergens.
