Only have one to add to the list -

Basics soft cheese (Philadelphia style) 47p for 200g - ok as a base with other foods (I mix it with tuna to make sandwich filling as no-one here likes mayo), but not enough flavour or texture to eat on it's own.
    .

Try it mixed with horseradish sauce as a jacket potato filling = Yummy!!! :D

I've been out of work for almost eight months so had no choice but to go for the cheaper alternatives or go without! It's been an eye opener and I am almost embarrassed when I think of how much of a brand snob I used to be :eek: There are still a few things I won't compromise on but I am a huge JS Basics and 99p shop convert . . . I must drive my friends nuts!!!

My favourite one has to be the JS Basics Mince at 97p for 400g (from memory) It's great for things like homemade burgers, meatballs, chilli and bolognaise :j:j True, I sometimes have to drain off the fat but that's surely good practice anyway!!

Also the Basics Liver Pate (rolls) are very reasonably priced and are delicious:T:T
mmmm, still seeking something witty to be my auto-signature . . . so this will have to suffice for now ;)
  • Basics are good for household things. I regularly buy: toilet roll, kitchen roll, brillo pads, household cleaners... But AVOID bin bags and tin foil (both too thin and a false economy).
  • we've been using basics curry sauce for years - at 9p a jar you can't go wrong! it's fine as it is if you're feeling lazy or you can use it as a base and add your own spices etc.

the sweet & sour sauce is not so good though - wouldn't bother with that again.

the pasta tomato sauce is quite good as a base for bolognese, chilli etc.

I've been buying this too and quite like it.
You need to remove the packaging and then cook it :)

:rotfl: Even *I* am not that silly!

Avoid basics cling film, doesn't cling and pieces don't cut on the cutter very well! It's the only bad basics product I've come across so far though.

I also found the same on their cling film.

    NEVER buy cheap bin bags.

I buy regularly the following "basic" items, and no complains so far:

    Green olives
    Black olives
    Mozzarella cheese balls
    Cheddar
    Bananas
    potatoes
    carrots
    madeira cake
    creme caramel
apples (on the small size but fine for my kids)
    plums
    apricots
    Salami
Brie (even better than expensive brand, I'm French, I know my bries!!!)
Washing up liquid(when you can fid it!)

Probably some more, but cannot remember. Wouldn't try any ready meal or equivalent though.
    So far so good.

The chilled (not frozen) ready meals are actually pretty good.
Our son loves them when he gets them and it means we get to have something which he doesn't like - we usually all have the same thing.
Try cottage/shepherds pie or spag bol. Surprisingly - there is no artifical stuff in them and they some are freezable and cook-from-frozen. Bargain as they are only around 80p. Lasagne is decent too. They are maybe not enough for a full sized portion for grown-ups though.

    We also like:

    fresh veg
    bananas (not much cheaper though)
    canned tomatoes
    small fromage-frais pots - son loves them - 45p for 6 BARGAIN
    salted tortilla chips
    rice crackers
    canned veg - not frozen
    wafer thin ham
    sliced chicken tikka
pizza bases - with sauce/cheese but without the ham - fan oven makes them a lot better
    pitta breads
    mild sliced cheddar
    baby wipes

Sainsbury;s salmon offcuts - fine in a sandwich with cream cheese.
Tortilla chips are great - though I prefer salted to flavoured.

    The houmous is very thin.
  • im very fussy with food, but the sainsburys basics yorkshire puds are lovely, just as good as any other brand make, you would never notice the difference, they are only about 60p for 12, im sure im not the only one who thinks this as they are nearly always sold out every time i go there :-)
  • Hi, I agree with quite a few listed - would also add houmous. We prefer it!
