Thinking about this I have only ever used PAYG phones and have always kept my old number by using my original simcard whereas perhaps with a contract you do need to register the new simcard BUT you don't need to use it in the new phone as Murtle says ;)

Perhaps someone with more knowledge about contracts can answer this question?

I'm a bit surprised the question arises if you are staying on the same network; I've never done it like that but I wouldn't expect there to be a new SIM card, but if there is I'd use the new one.

I did get a new one when I switched a contract down to payg, and once the new one is active, the old one does not work.

I don't think in fact it is an "upgrade" though as the OP is taking out a second contract.

Hi. Think I've understood thanks. I have a samsung e800 and am still in contract. I am having a new sony ericsson k750i and starting a new contract and they say I'm keeping the same number. Given that if I take the old sim card out for my new phone, I will have a samsung e800 complete with simcard for sale. But as I will have taken the phone number from it, how will it be allocated a new number?.

Oops, just read this and I think you are right Andy, there won't be a new simcard if "they" say the OP is keeping the same number ;)

I'm confused anyway now. I hope islandman will ask customer services.

Islandman. Are you getting a new contract as well on a different network? When I say new contract I mean extra texts or mins that type of thing.

Or is the contract exactly the same as the one you are on at the moment and with the same network?

If the contract is exactly the same then just put your old sim into your new phone. I have done this before and its still worked ok.

As I'm on contract I usually just buy a PAYG phone and take that sim out and put mine in.

Then with the PAYG sim I put it in my old phone and sell it.

    Hope this helps.

Who'd have thought that poor old me could throw such a lot of confusion into the arena. I suppose correct "word usage" might have helped, so, to clarify.

I am with orange and my 12 month contract is less than six months old. I am paying a fee because I want to "opt out" to have a new phone. They have made me aware that the 12 month will start again (tomorrow). Don't know why, but I would have thought the new simcard would be preferable to use simply because it IS new, and I've carefully written out all my numbers, ready to manually re-enter. I'm sure the reason given for registering with the new card in, was to ensure orange recognised the phone on their records.

Once I have the phone in my hands, we aim to go away for a few days, so I won't have access to the net for advice. Thanks for your help.

So really you are just getting a new phone on an upgrade from orange and continuing on the same contract which has now extended for another 12 months - is that right? if so you shouldnt be getting another sim card and it should just be a case on popping your sim card into the new phone.
