If you've got a good non-stick saucepan you can make a quick macaroni cheese by boiling the macaroni in the pan, draining it, returning it to the pan and stirring in the grated cheese until it melts.

For a quick tasty cheese pie, boil potatoes & onions until soft. Mash and mix in some grated cheese and a nob of butter. . Put in a dish and sprinkle a generous topping of grated cheese on the top. Put in a hot oven for about 20 minutes until the top of the cheese has turned golden.

Your grated cheese will keep for ages in the fridge if stored in a plastic box with a lid.

Try making your own pizza with tomato puree and grated cheese, and use up any odds and ends in the fridge. Look on the recipe section in old style moneysaving for lots more ideas! Home made pizza is far tastier than ANYTHING you can buy, and its so cheap its unbelievable!

Cheese can be frozen. I'd bag it up in portions and freeze it for use later.

    Hi there

I make cheese, potato n onion flans a lot.. and they are just like the ones i used to have at school.. especially with baked beans ;)

    They really are simple...

for a start i just make extra mashed potato when i cook a dinner... then fry off some thinly sliced onions and throw them in, and some of your grated cheese.. you don't need measurements as you can taste the mix and adjust it to suit yourself...make the mix first so it can cool down - its easier to work with

    right the pastry is:-

    1lb plain flour,
a good pinch of salt and a pinch of mustard powder if you have any (i also use a bit of fresh parmesan if you have any)
    then at 4oz soft butter
4oz soft lard and rub in.... (pastry likes to be cold - so i stick my mixing bowl in the empty sink-saves mess too;) )
when it looks like bread crumbs add nice cold water.... about 11 tbsp and use a knife to mix it together.. you may need a drop more - but be carefull not to get it too wet... then get your hand in and bring it all together in a ball
then stick it in a bag and put in the fridge for 30mins to cool down

i then turn it into individual flans.. but just use the pastry to line your chosen tin...(i smear english mustard on the base but you dont have to) pile in the mix and level and sprinkle on some more cheese.. you can put a top on if you like...

The oven should be about gas 5 1/2.... and put a baking sheet in to heat up..(will help the pastry crisp up) then just plonk your pie on the hot sheet and bake until golden...the filling is allready cooked so you are really just cooking the pastry
Any leftover pastry will freeze too
hope you give this a go and enjoy it :D

You can also sprinkle grated cheese on top of of the spuds on homemade cottage/shepherds pie...yummy.
  • Is there anything more versatile than cheese?

From simple cheese on toast upwards, there must be a thousand ways to use it in cooking, not to mention just enjoying it by itself or as a sandwich item.

I'd like to know whether there's anything out there I haven't heard of, so please feel free to add your favourite idea here.
  • Blue cheese sauce.

Heavenly with fish or cauliflower. One of my all time favourite food goodies.
  • nothing you won't have heard of. Macaroni cheese, cheese on toast, and grated on jacket potato
