I have noticed a significant increase on my Abbey charges ,This month it is £11+. I have an authorised overdraft of £1100 and never exceed it .I usually get to about £8-900 before my pension goes in to wipe the OD out ..I have searched their website for an explanation of charges but cannot see it anywhere . I have written to them for an expl'n of these charges so we'll see what they say .

This is what I am finding with my account, there is definitely a problem and you will need to write to them and put COMPLAINT in big letters across the top.....threaten them with the press to highlight to everyone else that probably isnt noticing it.

I have just written the letter to Abbey Complaints at Milton Keynes .I hope I get a quicker resolution to my complaint this time .My complaint in August 2007 when there was the problems with replacement Debit Cards went to the Financila Ombudsman after I rejected Abbeys offer and it is still being dealt with ( or not rather) by them almost 12 months later .I keep getting letters saying they are busy and hoping to deal with it soon .

What has irked me even more about this latest complaint is them saying they cannot explain the charges by e-mail and for me to 'phone them when if they had read my initial message they would have seen that I asked for a letter to be posted to me .I gave them my 'phone number and said if they wanted to speak to me by phone they could call but so far have heard nothing .

I had a phone call from complaints yesterday.

They confirmed they still can not work out how to fix this ongoing issue and that it might happen again.

They are offering me some compensation of approx £30 and suggested I take it up with the Financial Ombudsman.

My advice is to telephone the Chairman's Office for unresolved complaints on 01908 680227 (sad that I know the number without having to look it up).

I went round and round in circles over DD's erroneous instant overdraft charges. The first letter arrived and almost implied that it was DD's fault - after all she had made a 'same day' transfer. This is despite transferring the money from the esaver into the current a/c and subsequently transferring the money out. This letter offered £30 compensation and the writer assured DD that he would make sure the £34.62 Abbey 'stole' (my words) would be refunded. To cut a long story short, after waiting almost 6 weeks and trying to get someone to talk to DH, I spoke to a nice young man, who I have spoken to previously, and he said he would try and help me. DH got a telephone call from a nice young lady, who did not even attempt to go through any security. When she told DH that it would take a few days for the money to be put back into DD's account, he asked where he should send the summons. She then replied that the money would be back in DD's account by 5pm that day, and guess what, it was there by 3pm. Funny what can be done when there is a suggestion of a summons, especially when the customer is definitely in the right. A letter arrived yesterday confirming the telephone conversation, and offering DD a further £30 in compensation.
This was never about compensation, this was all about getting back the money Abbey 'stole'.

They know they have a 'glitch' but have done nothing about it. They are just sitting there waiting for customers to complain. In some cases, like mine, where it is only pennies, people won't do anything.

More than 2 weeks ago, we wrote to Richard Harris, copying Antonio Horta-Osario (something like that). To date, neither letter has been responded to.

I've now complained 3 times, had another letter received yesterday to say they are still investigating.....this is on top of another unrelated complaint when I requested a copy of my bank charges and they sent me a copy of my Son's bank account details and all his transactions ! I am still waiting for that to be resolved although they have offered my Son £25 and he wasn't the one that complained, I was !

I am on the phone to the Chairman's office first thing Monday morning. I am sick to death of these incompetent fools that are stealing my money too.

  • I've just been charged £81 by Abbey in overdraft charges, when I haven't been overdrawn at all, never mind over my overdraft limit. But I wrote to Abbey (their customer services phone line is a joke and all the Branch could do was fill in a form!) and the money was paid back into me account today. I await with interest (no pun intended) their reply to my letter, in which I asked for compensation as well as repayment. Can we not charge them for going 'overdrawn' with us?? But my real point in posting this, is that I note this thread started in FEBRUARY!! I was incorrectly charged in JUNE!! What the hell are they playing at?

Write a letter of complaint. You will get at least £15

NEVER waste your time ringing customer support for these issues. They are USELESS 100% of the time.

The address to write to is posted in this thread already.

Thanks Treecity, I have been reading this thread with interest. I too had 3.23p then 11p taken from my account over 2 months. I tried calling but each time I asked them to explain 'Instant overdraft interest' they said they needed me to hold while they got more information and they cut me off.

I decided to write to complaints at Milton Keynes and sent it 29th May. I have had no written response from Abbey, not even to confirm receipt of my letter, how rude is that!

I have though had 3.34p credited back to my account.

ps I dont have overdraft facility on my account which confused me further.

    regards DafP

Just another ShAbbey !!!!-up with their computer systems for which they are notorious.
They don't have the name ShAbbey without justification, even the FSA is onto them now.
I've had two months of interest charges when my account has been £2.5K in credit at all times, one charge for 0.10p and another for 0.12p. It was easy to get them removed by called ShAbbey complaints directly on 01908 680123
(UK office, not an Indian Call centre) and also ask them to pay for your time and the cost of the calls you've had to make.
My compensation tally for the rolling year seems to rise each month through ShAbbeys' incompetence - £295 so far !!!

Hmmm...I think I need to open an account there. :D

In the last year, I've had nearly £500 'goodwill'...from Halifax (3 totalling £100), A&L (£125), Norwich Union (£200), Ulster Bank, et al.

Apparantly, the FOS fee is now £450. Maybe that's influencing the goodwill offered?

    FOS ????? What's that ?
EDIT: Oh it's the Financial Ombudsman . I was getting mixed up with the FSA ( if they still exist)
So what's the £450.Do you mean they pay that or tell the bank to pay that if your complaint is upheld ?
