08007838422 Scam or Genuine HSBC?

    Got a call today from this Number at about 2 pm. The caller sounded British. He said he was calling from HSBC and whether I could talk. I asked him what this was regarding and he said that it was service related and nothing to worry about.

    He then asked me to verify my personal details and gave me the first half of my postcode. However, it was my old address and not the current one. Still I gave him that. But then he asked me for the second half of my date of birth. That's when I asked him how I could confirm whether he was from HSBC at all and not a scamster as I expected HSBC to have my latest address as I receive statements and letters from them all the time. He couldn't do anything about that but asked me to call telebanking and hung up, apologising for the inconvenience.

    Exactly the same thing happened to me yesterday. I have since contacted HSBC General Enquiries through Internet Banking, and they've got back to me saying:

    "Thank you for your e-message received 16 April 2009

I notice from the records that a call was made from the outbound team on 16 April 2009. Further, please note, your post code we hold is XXX XXX [the postcode of my old house several years ago].



    Please note that representatives from our Outbound Teams may call customers to keep them updated of products and services which may be of benefit to them. Occasionally, a courtesy call will be made to discuss account activity/ lending options/ recent charges/overdrawn balances, to ask if we can assist in any way.



    However, we are unable to confirm or divulge any account-related information to someone before successfully identifying them as a named party on the account.



    In order to maintain confidentiality, and to protect customers' personal information, a caller from the Bank must be certain that they are speaking with the correct person by asking security questions at the beginning of the call."

    Security? They've heard of it...

    It seems like this might be an outbound number from their call center and not just a department. I received a call from 08007838422 today from the Anti-Fraud investigation department.

    He did *not* ask me for any security details, however, he did ask if I had given my card details to a certain company and whether I had used my card at a local station, obviously using information straight from my account.

    It seems they get a large number of complaints regarding their phone calls as he was rather taken aback when I thanked him and told him that I appreciated that HSBC were looking out for my account.
  • If you receive a call from 08007838422, it is definitely a scam!
    I have received 2 of these calls to my home phone and 1 to my mobile. I told them I would not give them my details and that I would call the bank if there were any problems.
    They asked me to confirm some security details to verify my identity. I refused and they hung up. They have tried twice since. My husband told them he thought it was a scam and they did not argue with him. HSBC deny calling me on both occasions.

    Please do not give your personal details over the phone to anyone like this. If you have reason to believe there is a problem with your account, feel free to call your bank. If the call was genuine, then there would be no problem calling them back. HSBC advised me that they would never ask the questions I was asked over the 'phone.

    I will be speaking to HSBC though- I am not happy that my details seem to be freely available to whoever wants them! :mad:

    What details (apart from those you confirmed to the caller, such as the fact you actually have an HSBC account) did the person ringing you up allegedly have?

    I am receiving same calls, saying they are HSBC, and want my details over the phone before they say what the call is about.
    So I say I am busy, because I dont want to give my details to them.

    The last caller said that it was not important, they will ring again later to tell the "information".

    If it is not important, they should be able to say without asking my details.

    I dont expect them to say matter in detail, I just want to learn what the call is about !!

    After that call, I went to HSBC, to ask if there is a problem. They said there is no record that I have been called.. They would have a record if I was called.
    And there is not new information about my account to tell..
    And I had done good with not telling my details!!

    Sorry I know this is an old thread, but I just want to confirm that this is a genuine HSBC number, since I had a missed call from them and was able to check here before they called me again.

    We're emmigrating to Canada and have been dealing with moving our HSBC account over to a Canadian account. When they called they were able to tell me in detail about a problem where our bank cards were delivered here to the UK whilst we were on holiday for 2 weeks in Canada, so DHL sent them back. This isn't something a scammer would know.

    HSBC never asked for any piece of information in its entirity. For example, they asked me the first part of our post code and asked me to provide the second half. And they give me the day from my date of birth and asked me to provide the month and year.

    Any scammers trying to obtain information will not be able to provide those parts of the information, which is a good way to tell the difference.

  • Cappucino, HSBC now has added safeguards in place when call centres call clients. They will say something along the lines of "I will give you the first part of your postcode, will you give me the rest?" then quote the first part expecting a response. They will do the same with other information.
    Before you ask, yes, I work for a bank, but no, I didn't get a bonus!

    I missed a call from this number (a message was left from the fraud department of HSBC) and as it rang off I immediately received a text asking me to call the following number urgently: 0845 6031 832.

    I did so, the lady that took my call gave me 2 correct transactions within my account that had taken place within the past week and then asked if I had made any payments today around 11am, I had not. Someone had tried to use my bank account details to buy something from a software company. Luckily they did not have my security code and unsuccessfully typed in a 'guessed' one, This caused an alert which was acted on promptly.

    My card has now been cancelled and a new one is is the post.

    I am glad that HSBC are taking these things seriously.

    Just to warn you of what HSBC and myself sounds like a scam.

    I recieved a call on my mobile (Number withheld) and a woman asking to speak to myself. I was told she was working on behalf of HSBC and I she told me I had been invited to a presentation at a local hotel and would be reimbursed for £40 for my time. She wanted me to confirm my details. At that point I said was not willing to confirm information due to not feeling confident she works for HSBC, I then terminated the call.

    When I got home I phoned HSBC and was told if HSBC try to contact you;

    • A note will be made against your account on their system.
    • You will receive an automated message asking you to contact the bank.
    • HSBC will not contact you directly.
    • HSBC operators will not ask you any passwords or PINS.
    • HSBC bank DOES NOT pass ANY information (Name, Address, phone number etc) onto any third party.
    So common sence, if someone claims to be from HSBC, ask questions. Who are they, Who do they work for, What are their contact details. Phone HSBC from a phone number from https://www.hsbc.co.uk (not google) and speak to an operator. They will be able to confirm if HSBC has been trying to get intouch with you.

    I guess that applies to any other bank also. Better safe than sorry.

    Recieved letter from "Optimisa Research" with the invite today. Contacted HSBC who again say they have nothing to do with this company, despite the the letter saying "Thank you for agreeing to come to our group discussion looking at customer communications on behalf of HSBC".

    Have been asked to take the letter to a High Street branch on Tuesday. Also raised a call with "Action Fraud", a police fraud call centre.
