I have just joined this forum as I have also been receiving drop calls from this number, it seem they have knowledge of bank accounts as it happens when I am overdrawn, I have received these drop calls in the past.
I get them about 4 times a day sometimes my mobile barely rings, when you try to return the call you get an automated message which states HSBC called but you do not need to do anything but you will be charged for the call. Which indicates to me it is fraudulent, are they making the calls in the hope they will be returned in which case generate vast sums of money?
Either way I dont trust the bank either as security is lacking and I doubt they will be caught as criminality and fraud seems to be on the increase in Britain regardless of all our security/surveillance/cctv cameras etc.0 -

1) You've read too many conspiracy theories.
2) 'Vast sums of money'? Erm, I doubt it.
3) If you don't trust the bank why do you have products with them? Genius.0 -
I got a call from them this afternoon, then I checked eBanking and it looks like they are implementing something new on there relating to security and they are doing automated calls to check your contact details are up to date.
Or something!0 -

Of course, its worth noting that HSBC actually owns both the above institutions.

It is a HSBC number because I called the bank today about something and gave them my mobile number to ring me back on and they called from this number.0

I think in this situation that I would call them back but certainly not give my details.
Instead ask them to call you again, clearly state who they are, and prove it (the last one is of course the interesting one) - perhaps by disclosure of what info they have about you!!!
Given the pervalance of ID theft some of these calls, and the presumption that you will just hand out info willy nilly, are barking (polite version!!!).0 -
I've gotten a few of these calls over the last few days. They relate to a family member who has a HSBC account. Having received a call halfway through reading about the number I just told the call centre that the person no longer resides at this address (with them having moved out a few months ago).
It sounded like that will stop them calling, however I'm unsure of how important the call was. Could or should I have tried to answer the security queries so I could get details about why they were trying to contact to pass along (if it's about an account being overdrawn or fraud activity it would be useful to know). Is it likely that any pressing matter would be highlighted in a letter (in fact should I request that, if they ring again, they should simply write to the address on file with the information they're trying to pass on?)?0 -
Let me just clarify this because this is a common one....
This number is primarily used for the Collections Department (As it used to be called). If you have a call from this department then it usually indicates 99% of the time that you have been over or are currently still over your overdraft, are borrowing without pre-approval or have not stuck to an agreement that you have arranged with HSBC.
Also-sometimes this number is the offshore call centre because mail has been returned or an item of post, sent by the bank has not made it to you.
Usually, if an outbound call has been made then it will not show in the contact section of the account system as it is not always noted (these calls are made from a pre structured queue and the adviser just sits and waits for beeps and connections)-because this list just revolves, this will be why calls are frequent as anyone who has worked in outbound call centres may know-the system just automatically dials the next person until a case is resolved or the customer has reached an agreement and they are removed from the dialing system
And in response to asking for details, the advisers will work off a strict verification script and will not divulge anything to the customer until these questions are confirmed. Hence you can hang up and ring back-the pre-recorded message will play and then you can confirm the details, the next time the adviser calls. Or if you are in any way worried-you will be able to identify yourself via the automated system and get through to an HSBC adviser in the collections department on
0845 6006423
And if it was this team-they will speak to you once you have entered your details.
There is however another section of the system that the adviser on telephone banking does not look at and this will indicate the majority of the time, that collections has tried to call.
Some people innocently don't realise they are ''being monitored'' by the bank-hence the contact.
But if you see this number on your phone, it is indeed genuine and my besy advice is to check your bank statement and make sure that everything is in order.
Finally-if a branch calls-you will usually know because the number will be 0800 or 08455-but technically, branches should log every attempt to call a customer if it is a sales/service call-but maybe this does not always happen, and these calls are extremely rare.
Hope this reassures some people out there xxLoan-£3600 only 24 months of payments to go!!!

So there is no difference between 'them' and a scammer ringing up...Hence you can hang up and ring back-the pre-recorded message will play and then you can confirm the details, the next time the adviser calls. Please tell me how this discourages people falling foul of scams or running up bills on 08/9 numbers?Conjugating the verb 'to be":
