  • Please tell me how this discourages people falling foul of scams or running up bills on 08/9 numbers?

Why should they want to discourage the latter?
  • ALSO BE AWARE THAT ITS POSSIBLE TO SPOOF TELEPHONE NUMBER CLI

I work in Telecoms, and i feel it is worth throwing into the pot that its quite east to spoof a number if you have the right access to a telephony system.

Thus in theory even if this is a legit number, a scammer could also be "appearing" to use it when they call you.

I just rung this number and it said "You were called by HSBC Bank, no further action is required by yourself and there is no need to return the call"

I went overdrawn accidently by £200 odd pound 2 weeks ago so thats probably why they are ringing, but if i don't need to return the call then they don't need to call me so often!

I don't think this is a genuine HSBC number, as I don't have any accounts with them and nothing in collections with anyone, yet this number has rung me twice today.

If I don't know a number, I don't bother to pick up. Is just annoying when they continue ringing.
  • My brother has been contacted over 40 times in the last week and a half from this number. He is a HSBC customer so called their call centre and his own personal banking team, neither of whome could find any reason why he would be receiving these calls. This is the second episode of this, with there being no reason for the calls on the previous occasion.

Personally I would never give any personal information to anyone who cold called my number. If this is a "legitimate" HSBC contact methodology then the bank need to be hauled over the coals as they are contributing to the likelihood of fraud by acting exactly as the criminal fraternity would. If this is not a legitimate HSBC operation they should be pulling their finger out and doing all they can to inform customers of the situation.

Either way this kind of behaviour is seriously damaging the reputation of the bank and will certainly make me think twice before utilising any of their product offering.

  • This number rings me all the bloody time.

I never answer calls that appear to be from call centres, witheld, unkown numbers etc.

If they have something urgent to tell me they can use good old snail mail. That way I have a record of the communication as well.
  • I can confirm that 08007838422 is a genuine HSBC number.

I recieved a call from that number today, I answered, there was a short pause and then a very polite scottish woman spoke to me about upgrading my account.

I was informed the call would be recorded for training (as is the norm) and then I confirmed my details. I declined the offer, all was well, I put down the phone and thought nothing of it. Untill I had a naggin feeling that I might have just been unwittingly scammed. So I googled the number and found this forum and others like it, all of which seemed to have assertained that the call claimed to be HSBC but nobody had posted enough information to put my mind at ease.

So I just called HSBC customer support, to confirm that I had actually been contacted by them eariler. After the woman on the end of the phone looked in the computer she did confirm that exact time of the earlier call and the nature of the call.

Big sigh of relief! Mind at ease, and now back to my mundane job.

Hope this helps ease the worries of others.
  • BadWithMoney,
I like you had a phone call earlier on today from this number and a nice Scottish man called Steve asked me to confirm my postcode. I declined to give him that information because I'm paranoid, but I came home and checked my bank account online then called HSBC and they confirmed that they had a note of the call.
I don't understand why, if I am logged as an internet banking user they can't email me asking me to upgrade my account.

    Grr!

I havent had any phone calls but have had e`mails telling me to go through link and confirm details, saying if I dont do this within 48hrs I will not be able to access my account.
Very strange that, as I dont have an account with them.
Has anyone else had the same thing?

They are scams, and you shouldn't click on them.
