08007838422 Scam or Genuine HSBC?

I don't get why you can't set up a pass phrase that they give you - that way there would be two way confirmation you are both speaking to the right people.
Is it really rocket science? :rolleyes:0 -
Hi I just thought I'd add that this is a genuine number. When I received a call from them asking me to verify my details, I was very skeptical and asks how I could be sure that I was indeed speaking to someone from HSBC. In turn, the guy reassured me by providing some of my details, such as DOB, post code, and even a couple of digits of my security number. Having assured me that he was legit, he then asked me for another couple of numbers from my security number to make sure that he was speaking to the right person as well.
I've since received numerous calls from the number over the last couple of years at different points regarding different issues. I still always ask them to prove that they are calling from HSBC each time. Hope this helps! It's always better to play safe!0 -
Well yes this is an HSBC number....
It's their horrific Philippines’ collections centre. Calling the number back it does state that a call was attempted and no further action need be taken.
Of course till the next time they call you! Why I call it horrific is twofold. Firstly they use diallers so you can pick up the phone and because soemone else answered before you, your call is dropped. The other reason is (as an example) that you can tell them you'll be getting paid on the Friday and it's currently Monday. You get a reply of, 'so how much will you be paying now'. It's the proverbial nightmare scenario.
Today I've been called 5 times and each call was dropped so I never spoke to anyone. What I would mention is that there are worse places than HSBC. Capital One, should you miss a payment can involve a daily call from them. There's some weird named DCA who I know do work for NatWest amongst others. Now they will call you forever and be nasty if you ever decide to answer.

Okay - I just called HSBC after recieving one of these calls, and they had no record of someone trying to contact me.0

Some of these calls seem to be genuine and others not so....
I have been plagued with these calls recently, and every time I ask the caller where they got my phone number, they hung up.
My advise would be, never give out any information like to this to a cold caller.......
If the bank needs to contact you they will write........To travel at the speed of light, one must first become light.....0 -
got a call today from 08007838422 asking for my postcode (which I gave, I'm a business so my postcode is available anyway) and then the limit on my business card to which I went ballistic!
The guy then asked me if it was OK to contact me by post. I said yes.
I then called HSBC on the number on the back of my credit card and they confirmed that it was someone from one of their call centers (Philippines I presume) making a courtesy call. I expressed my concern however, about them asking clients for these sort of details over the phone. They said to me that the questions will soon be changed. I promised I will answer the questions next time if they ask me something like the colour of my cat, not my credit limit!:rotfl:0 -
As others have said, it is a genuine HSBC number. It is impossible to tell which department has tried to call you though, just from the number. If it's a sales call or a call because you've gone overdrawn there will be a note left on your account but if it's the fraud department there won't be any notes left. I had a call from them last week as there had been unusual activity on my acount and they wanted to run through some transactions to ensure I had made them. (I had, it was unusual activity due to pre-holiday shopping).0

I had a call from this number - M&S Fraud department with a query about a transaction on my card.
The Indian chap on the other end of the phone gave me the number of my house , the first letter of my mums maiden name and the first letter of my employer - and asked for the rest of those details.
Also mentioned the value of the transaction (not who to) but then I was expecting the call as I had already rung customer services to ask why the payment had been declined.Thank you to everyone that posts competitions and freebie information
Freebies : Seeds of change Chocolate, Bag
Competitions : None yet but am hopeful0 -
Got a call today from this Number at about 2 pm. The caller sounded British. He said he was calling from HSBC and whether I could talk. I asked him what this was regarding and he said that it was service related and nothing to worry about.
He then asked me to verify my personal details and gave me the first half of my postcode. However, it was my old address and not the current one. Still I gave him that. But then he asked me for the second half of my date of birth. That's when I asked him how I could confirm whether he was from HSBC at all and not a scamster as I expected HSBC to have my latest address as I receive statements and letters from them all the time. He couldn't do anything about that but asked me to call telebanking and hung up, apologising for the inconvenience. As I also have a M&S card, I checked both my bank and credit card accounts online and they were all ok.
Next, I called HSBC on their complaints department number which is available on their website. They confirmed that a call was indeed made and it was marketing related. For some reason, my correspondence address had been updated but not my 'home' address which remained the same as the old one. I asked them to update that as well.
In short, the call I got from the number 08007838422 was infact from HSBC as confirmed by their complaints dept!!!
But even still, in the future I will never give out my personal details over the phone unless I am sure it is the bank calling, esp details like my Sort code, Account No and any letters of my password.0 -
This is one of the call centres numbers that I am having fun with at the moment, please see my separate HSBC thread.
More often than not when I answer there is noone there as the autodialler has not routed it through to an available employee at their end.0
