Another question: I had some leftover rice from the meatballs that I cooked for the kiddie's tea, and having searched the forum have put it into the freezer. I never knew you could freeze cooked rice! However, I'm now a bit scared about the health risks - I've been making the children a rice salad once a week for their packed lunches. Does anybody else do this - it sounds as if it's a big no no, because of the rice hanging around out of the fridge. Any ideas? Please?

I always freeze left over rice, because I dont like rice hanging around the fridge. I tend to use it up when we're having one of those nights when we're eating different things at different times. If there is a lot, you could do a special fried rice/spicy rice type thing?
  • evening all. just up dated my sig after spending another £11.50p today, i have enough milk to last most of the week. i think the only other thing we will need is a few spuds for some mash.

Well, mine haven't either. But the rice threads made me question myself - I never realized rice was such a source of food poisoning! Thanks for the reply. Maybe it's okay if it's been chilled and is just in the lunch box for a morning. I usually ignore warnings about food - I'm forever eating stuff that's past its best before, and I guess I've just been lucky, but I'm always careful when it comes to the kids.

Having studied microbiology of part of my uni course, I'm paranoid about eggs and rice! Not necessarily together lol. I'm happy to eat out of date stuff as long as its not dairy.

    Morning one and all,
I have not posted for a little while - poorly parents!
As I have been travelling backwards and forwards to help mum and dad I have had to use their main supermarket, Morrisons. That has really stung my pocket. I am a Lidl person and I am definitely noticing the difference in my pocket. Anyway, have updated my sig and am still on track.

Can anyone tell me how to cook trout - my dad has a freezer full that I need to use up and I have no idea?

Thanks, am off for a cup of tea before I start all over again today

    Morning everyone,

Well got up this morning and there's no milk  so I'll have to get some more today (we get through ridiculous amounts of milk, around 6-8pints a day) had to have dried milk in my tea which isn't that nice but bearable!
Also on my last tin of catfood so I'll have to get more of that too.
I'll have to take a trip to Tesco on my way home so I will have a check of what else I need and pick it all up at once then I won't have to make several trips and be tempted by offers each time!;)

I'm really, really determined to come in under target, which is going to be a massive challenge as Easter is at the very end of my month! I've already got my eggs in (within the grocery budget too) so at least haven't got to buy those.

    Happy Wednesday :D

does your shopping list vary or change month by month? or do you eat the same foods every month? what about crisps and choc? fizzy pop? juice?

hiya, just spotted that I didn't answer this, the thread's growing so quick!:o

The list definately varies from month to month, and the thing I will batch cook is based around what's reduced or on special offer. If nothing reasonably priced is available that way, I make something cheap and cheerful, hence the meat pies. They worked out as 19p each and were enormous, pasty-shaped and as wide as a dinner plate, I kid you not!:D

Crisps and choc have been replaced by HM millionaires shortbread, brownie, HM biscuits etc, and get included in the budget. I freeze half the cookie dough to whip out later in the month and bake more. But we've still got cinnamon shortbread and chocolate fudge left at the mo.:T

Drinks-wise, you're right, we're not really into pop or juice, Tea and proper coffee is the order of the day. But I'm sure other folks on here will be along to add hints on how to get those cheaper too!;)

    HTH

We can do it everyone! Go, march GC challengers go!:j

Well my experiment with lentil pate was quite succesful - Only had green lentils so it's a yicky muddy green colour, it doesn't look very pretty but it tastes nice! I was planning to follow the recipe on here - http://www.channel4.com/entertainment/tv/microsites/Y/yawye/snacks.html - but basically ended up making a lentil and veg curry, had a bit of it as it was for tea and then let the rest cool a bit, stuck it in the blender with a bit of butter and whizzed it up. Got a supply of crackers and oatcakes at work so those topped with the pate will be my snacks for the next few days.

Hey, good link there redsquirrel, thanks. From having made it, d'you think it would suffer much without the Miso? She's well into it for health reasons, but I wonder if it's just a pricey way to get stuff to taste salty!;)

    Any thoughts gratefully recieved.

    Morning all

My 5th NSD in a row today :D Today is one of those times when im soooo glad i have a good stock of stuff in -got woken up by a thunder storm (which i love:p ).... by the time i got to the bathroom we had a hail storm and now it has turned into a big snow storm  -so staying in suddenly sems so much easier ;)

Had a check yesterday and i reckon i have enough fruit n veg in to last me until monday :T which means i won't have to go out until then..... the freezers are packed to capacity ....so now i just have to have to wait until monday to do a bit of a top up...

Next month im going to allow myself a bit extra so i can get a few extra bits n bobs for the cooking cupboard, spices, asian sauces etc.. so i have that to look forward to:p

keep up the great work everyone

Hi - sorry, and huge thanks for your reply,I won't keep harping on about rice :D, but does this mean that you wouldn't suggest sending a rice salad in a kid's packed lunch box... would I be better doing a weekly pasta salad instead?

Well I didn't use miso and it tastes fine to me, don't think it's worth going out and buying it for it. I did go through a phase of having miso soup for lunch as it was easy to make up at work, just chucking some hot water in with the paste, veg and noodles, but sickened myself of it so haven't bought any for ages!

I also didn't have carrots on their own as per her recipe so mine's got mixed frozen veg in instead, seemed to work ok although there's still the odd whole pea in there :D

Some nice ideas on that page I thought, I've made hummous before, and a similar butterbean dip/ spread that was quite tasty!
