DVD Unlocking/Multi-region Article Discussion

Yup
So far we've been discussing region codes. These are put on the discs by the movie companies to restrict where and when they can be viewed.
But NTSC and PAL are something different. They are TV broadcast standards. In USA the programmes are broadcast in NTSC system, in UK they are broadcast in PAL system.
So the DVD discs are recorded in the system of the country where they are going to be used.
The difference between NTSC and PAL is technical. Different number of lines on the screen, different frame rates.
Sometimes NTSC discs will play OK on PAL equipment - sometimes they won't.
It depends on the DVD player. These days many DVD players are manufactured 'dual standard' so that they can be sold all over the world.

@Laptop_John
The region of the disc does not affect the quality of the picture.
It's the standard that causes a poor result.Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.0 -

I've downloaded DVDFab Platinum shareware as a trial for 30 days and it's worked very well so far converting a Region 1 DVD using a computer.
There's also DVD Region+CSS Free and Audio DVD Creator
Blurb from site: 'DVDFab Platinum 4.1.0.2 (Mar 4, 2008) is all-in-one DVD copying/converting/burning software. In just one or two steps, you can copy any DVD to DVDR/PSP/iPod/etc.'

This DVD Genie 4.10 for region free DVD drives - (http://www.inmatrix.com/genie/) was also reviewed in Computeractive (http://www.computeractive.co.uk/vnunet/downloads/2128245/dvd-genie), I've looked at the webpage and the software would appear to be free, although donations are welcome.
