I was thinking the same thing - there seems to have been so many threads on here recently about problems with breadmakers and I was starting to wonder if there was a problem with the flour that's available at the moment. My mum's a baker and I asked her about it last night, and she says that the quality isn't great, and the flour isn't producing consistently good bread the way it used to. Obviously it's not such a big problem when you're making bread by hand as you can compensate for water/rising times etc, but I can see how bad flour could cause real problems in breadmakers.0

Sadly, it failed again on the white program with a 50/50. I also did a white one later which hasn't risen as well as normal - Normally the medium 400g size fills the pan but this one was much shorter, although just about usable. So I'll probably try it a few more times before declaring it kaputt.
Thanks again.
Rich read this thread before you give up, it might be the cause of the problem.

I've been using Lidl's white bread flour - 48p for 1.5kg and all my white loaves have been fine.

Not the cheapest however I'm desperate to get good loaves. My till receipt says:
1.30 for the organic wholemeal
1.49 for the canadian strong
I've been paying about £1.10 for the hovis anyway.
I've currently got one on rapid at the moment (50/50)0 -
Thanks guys! Wow, see pizza-I didnt think of that:) Perfectly justified.0

Hmmm that's interesting Jenny, thanks for making the call and sharing the info.
My white loaves are absolutely fine, it's the 50/50 wholemeal but so far (only had the machine a week!) I've used 50% Dove Farm Organic Wholemeal (on special at Asda!), and 50% cheap Asda SmartPrice flour. The two 50/50 w/m loaves I've made haven't risen especially well. The second one sunk after baking but I'm pretty sure I put extra water in it so that's probably my fault.
I'm going to try 50/50 w/m with proper white breadflour in place of the cheap stuff this weekend to see if it makes a difference and by the sound of things I'll avoid Hovis!Piglet
