Yet another unrisen loaf from my Panny. Originally thought it was Morrisons flour that I was using that was at fault, but I've just taken this one out, made using Hovis flour and that's also not risen. Any ideas? Followed the recipe exactly as I always do. It's meant to be a large loaf so it usually rises to above the top of the pan.

Hi Soba, I had this problem too, what yeast are you using? I use the Hovis sachets in the green box and they are perfect, but when I tried the yeast in the orange box (can't remember the name) my bread turned out like that. I now use Hovis Yeast and Hovis Flour and haven't (touch wood) had a problem since.

I was using the Dove's yeast in the orange box, but thought it was past it's best, so I was going to go back to Hovis yeast, but when I went into Asda they don't do it so I had to buy their own make. I made a 50/50 loaf the other day with a different white flour and that was fine, and that's what made me think it might be the flour. Tomorrow I'll make another loaf and try a bit less water. It's all a bit disappointing when you've had such a lot of beautiful loaves then get a batch like this, especially when you've got the butter softened ready to snaffle the first slice!!

I dont get good results with Hovis flour - only use it for my pizza dough now. Alternatively try 20ml less of water.

You are not alone. I did the milk loaf recipe yesterday and it was brick like and half size. Very doughy inside. Probably end up in the bin.

Made it with Tesco pink packet flour. I am sure have used this with no problems. Now wondering if its the yeast??
I am following the Artisan bread method too and as a result lots of doughy naff bread going in the bin. At this rate I will start buying it again!:(

I think the best thing to do is try another brand of flour. Flour batches can vary due to the weather and in turn this affects the gluten content. It's not uncommon to buy bad batches of flour. If you've always used a particular brand in the past and are now experiencing problems, just try another brand.

I've only been making HM bread since February and I don't get good results from Sainsburys or Hovis so I don't bother buying them now. One particular day I made a loaf using Hovis, turned out flat, immediately following that I made one with Waitrose flour and it came out perfect. The ingredients were exactly the same except for the flour

I've never used anything but Waitrose flour (except when making granary bread) and have never had a problem with it (touch wood:D got one on the go at the moment).

Knonie - I like tiger bread - the rolls are great, so would you please let me have the recipe for the paste?

Also would it be possible to make the rice flour in something like a coffee grinder, I wonder... I did it with oat flour for muffins a few weeks back :)

Hi guys stumbled across this thread last night and was inspired to use my BM< only prob was my yeast is no good and no bread flour:rolleyes: . So as i say u guys have inspired me to start using my Bm not that it doesn't get used just not as often as I would like;) . So I have a quick few question for those with a MR bm. There is a baswic rapid setting on mine that I have never tried Do I just do as I normally do making a loaf and put on this setting? Also this basic rapid says that it will do any size, how can trhis be obviously if I was making the largest size it would need longer? wouldn't it? Sorry if I am being a bit dim but would rather wait 2hrs 40mins for bread than wait over 3hrs.
I have been that inspired I read through my instructions today and thought I might give making croissants and muffins awhirl too.:D TIA kal25

Yes the panasonic makes normal size loaves - the only thing to be aware of is that the XL loaf is 'high' rather than long so the slices have to be cut in half to go in the toaster :)
