Bear in mind too that Tax Credits take a while to have the previous year finalised.

You need to find out that date for CAB to do calculations for you. The college will maybe class someone as being there until the end of term ie assuming he was attending a bit to start with.

It might not be as bad as you think and the only way to stop your worry is CAB tomorrow.

When you have a non dependant living with you there is a non dependant deduction taken from any Housing Benefit you receive.

In fact my figures are wrong re HBen as there is no non dependant deduction made from HBen or CTax Ben for under 18's. So the extra you have received in HBen is from the date he was 18 and the amount for a person with low income/no income is £2.30 per week HBen and £2.30 pw CTax Ben.

To get correct figure multiply the weeks from when he was 18 to the date he moved out by £4.60.

    Non dependant deduction info

From the date he was 18 you could have applied for a Second Adult Rebate. This is applied for by the Council Tax payer (you) and is dependant on the other adult's income (in your son's case none (?)). This would also be claimed through your council. Your income is not taken into account only the non dependant.

Yes if he was 18 in 2007.

  • thanks a lot for that hope you have a good sleep will go the cab and let you know how i get on thanks again nite nite
  • Jackie - if you only receive £50 a week in self employed income then you will be entitled to some WTC in your own right even without having your son living with you - are you claiming this ?? You would probably also qualify for housing benefit
At the end of the day your problem will be convincing everyone that you did not know he was not going to college - this they will find hard to believe seeing as it was for 14 months ! Even so get the correct dates - let the authorities know the full story and then see what happens. The worst that will happen is that they will put some sort of payment plan in force whereby you pay so much a week...please - no more talk of hanging yourself.
I have had brain surgery - sorry if I am a little confused sometimes ;)
  • oh i would never do that got 3 children and 3 granchildren to stop me ha ha just the way i felt at the time thanks any way
