My mum used to have two dogs and both lived 14 years. They never had to see the vet. My mum didn't have insurance for them but put the money into a savings account especially for the dogs just in case. Now my point is that you can go years and years without ever claiming and giving the money to insurance companies..where as if it's in a savings account and you never need it, then you still have that money you have saved..0

Hi Jim,
The one I WOULD NOT under any circumstances recommend is Pet Healthcare services, thieving gits put my dogs premiums up from £234 to £371 per annum, she is very old, but no need for that... told them where to stick their insurance!!!
However I was looking around the internet the other day and found this site
http://www.animalfriends.org.uk/
They seem very reasonable, but do not know anything about them, has anyone else had any dealings with them??? They would even insure my dog as old as she is at a ok rate, well I think so anyway, seems you have to put existing ailments etc. and they make a decision whether to insure you or not, but as you have a young dog, you would not have any trouble... just me with my poor old thing.
Good luck

Don't forget to go for a policy that will cover a condition for LIFE - not just for a set time or amount of claim.
These policies are dearer - but worth it if your pet develops a chronic condition requiring regular medication, speical diet, blood testing etc...
My cat has ongoing renal problems and is no longer covered by insurance so I have a fund building up for her for emergencies. I have also renewed her insurance which will cover other things unrelated to the renal problem - for this I went thru Lloyds -who were very competitive at the time.0 -
I would agree with what has been said already. Make sure your pet will be covered for LIFE.
Eg if the cat gets erm lets say.... diabetes, most insurance will pay out for the medication and vets bills for the rest of the year, then when you come to renew your policy they will say uuh uuuh your pet has a pre existing condition, we will now charge you x amount/not cover you. Then you will be stuck finding an insurere that will pay out for your pet as it has a pre existing condition.
You must check that this is not the case as i know lots of the insurers dont make it clear.
Petplan was great with my dog but is very very pricy so i have discontinued it, ive been highly recommended M&S pet insurance but am still checking it out!
Good luck0 -

I compared Petplan and M&S and M&S came out dearer and there were more restrictions in the policy.0 -
Check the small print!! Some companies put a limit on the amount you can claim per condition too. If you have a young animal needing lifetime care for a condition you could find as they get older you will have reached the limit and will still have to fund the veterinary care yourself in your pet's senior years.Obsolete0
