The giving up/cutting down alcohol support thread!

Evening all, welcome to the newbies
This is the first drive home that I didn't think about buying alcohol, but now that's occurred to me I can't stop thinking about it
Never mind, got a nice fizzy can of lilt chilling in the fridge, by the side of the rock hard cold double decker for after dins:D
The saving grace is that although it might feel uncomfortable having a craving, no matter how strong, I know I'll feel great this evening when I'm laying in bed sober and will get up feeling normal tomorrow and be able to add another £3.50 to the total and another day notched on the bed post!!
Good luck to all abstaining today

I forgot that my DH is out tonight (work dinner, lucky thing). So, in one way it removes temptation as he won't say 'fancy a glass?'. Will have to get all the kids done and dusted on my own though which is always a little more stressful!
So, if all else fails i can always go to bed early (i did this a lot when i gave up smoking 'cause i wouldn't ever get out of bed to go and smoke!).0 -
kids don't meant to make you want to sometimes....honest! but I understand where you're coming from...oddly enough, not drinking makes it easier as they're no longer an obstacle to your next glass - if you see what I mean...
seems I wasn't the only one not around last night..hope everyone's OK...For what I've done...I start again...And whatever pain may come ...Today this ends... I'm forgiving what I've done -AF since June 20070 -

Can I please join you lot too?
I'm also one of those glass or 3 of red wine-at-home-every-night people. Not really enough to get blotto, but just enough to give me that sluggish, tired, dry-mouthed feeling the next morning and wish I hadn't.
I had laser eye surgery a couple of months ago and completely laid off the drink about a week before the surgery and about a month after, as I was worried about dry eyes and was aware that alcohol was a contributory factor. Drunk loads of water instead and I can honestly say I was gobsmacked at the difference - not just with my mood and energy levels (and smaller grocery bills) but also my appearance. Eyes were whiter and brighter and skin was clearer and plumper and looked way less wrinkly.
Recently started going back to bad old habits of having something every night again and I need to stop!!!! So glad to have found this thread.... :T0 -
Hi All- big welcome to anyone new, jump on board. Recognising you might have a problem, or just feeling you want to tackle your drinking is a big big step...and it can be very tough to tame the beast, with lots of ups and downs on the way, but it can be done...only about 20% of people treated for alcohol problems manage to kick their habit into touch long term, and even then have relapses every now and then but being sober is the best feeling in the world and a massive achievement...theres no downside really, I can't think of one positive thing about being drunk but I could write the longest post ever on the benefits of being sober.
Hope everyone is OK- good luck today.0 -
Hi again, glad there are some other new people here in the same boat as me. the night I joined this thread, I had 2 bottles of lager but yesterday nothing. Didn't sleep that well though which I was surprised about - thought I would be out like a light without the alcohol. Though maybe I just have to learn to fall asleep properly instead of just conking out after a bottle of wine.
Its been inspiring reading everyone's stories on here. Thank you.Cogito ergo sum. Google it you lazy sod !!0 -

This is me too. I don't get rolling around drunk every night but just what you would call 'chilled'. I wake up tired and have little get-up-and-go. However, when I abstain I am so much happier. Im off to Cyprus at the weekend and Im a bit stressed this week getting things ready and making sure my 2 daughters have everything in place for when Im away (they're 18 and 21). As a result Ive had a drink every night this week. Ive really cut down recently as a result of joining this thread, but this week Im finding it difficult to abstain.
Once Im back from my week away I shall be on a healthy eating and AF plan so will be back on this thread again!
Good look to everyone who is abstaining or cutting down!0 -

I found it very difficult getting to sleep without alcohol last week  made me wonder what I am actually doing to my body if it can't function properly without it!0 -
Bismarck, as ever, wise words. in fact I really try to avoid drinking anything if I am alone with the children - I always think of the worst case 'what if I had to drive them to the hospital?' scenerio.
Thanks mollypolly for your welcome
beachbeth, louise and EA, I really recognise what you're saying with the have a few but not rolling around drunk thing. What i find irritating about the whole thing is the 3 glasses of red drunk through the night does nothing really to add to the quality of enjoyment of the evening, but really makes you feel dreary the next day.
I also feel a lot happier if abstaining, and I know it has a really negative effect on my mental well being. We've just moved to a completely new place so already I am feeling a bit blue and 'lost' so I really think that not drinking will help me cope with the challenges of settling in here.
No alcohol last night or tonight so a good start I think. Will have to write a signature if this carries on!0
