  • OMG having a trauma this morning!! DD is at home as she twisted her ankle at the weekend so she is off school resting it and she phoned in floods of tears to say one of the cats had brought in a robin! it is still alive and seems quite alert and hopping around, she has put it in a box and given it some bread and milk at the advice of the RSPCA helpline but she says now it is bleeding so I have to do a mercy dash at lunch and take it to the vets  I hope it survives poor little thing!

Wish I could remember to copy before I submit just lost my post (sorry if it ends up on here twice) - got thro lunch: went straight to bar & asked for diet coke, OH raised his eyebrows & said what's that in aid of?, I said diet, & that was it no more comment. Luckily they gave me a pint of the stuff so did not have to think about a second drink. And I felt just as mellowed-out after the meal as usual, maybe it's actually the food that does it not the wine?! So, major hurdle of day over, phew, without any difficulty. AFD3 here I come I hope! But it's only 3.40.
Hope all you doing OK, catch ya later.
    Shoppy how is Robin?

    Hello all

Just joined this thread and haven't read all the way through so apologies if I repeat stuff or ask daft questions.

Last week I decided enough was enough - time to stop drinking.
I am not a huge fan of the taste of drink, but I do like that magic moment just as you get drunk and before you lose control.
Sadly for me the losing control was becoming all too easy and I would often be out of my box before 7 in the evening, having knocked back at least half a bottle of spirits (at least!) and then a bottle of wine.
I usually managed to do this in the space of about 2 hours as I seemed to have to do this as quickly as possible. Not sure why.
The hangovers were becoming an issue and my total lack of any recollection of conversations the night before were getting to be an issue
Anyway as I said enough was enough so I have stopped.
7 days and not a drop.

My only problem is I take ages to get to sleep now.

I can drink herbal tea, and don't eat too late into the evening, but no matter how tired I am I lie awake for at least an hour. Not thinking about anything in particular, just not able to get to sleep.
Anyone else had this, and if so did it last long?
    Any tips?

TBH I am happy to live without the booze and if this is the only side effect then I will be more than happy.

Must admit I feel great and not missing it one bit.

Well done you!:T Good luck with the rest of the day, I am really dying for a drink today!!!!

Just rang vets and robin is fine - flying around the prep room the nurse said! I have to ring again in the morning and see if he is ready to be released back into the wild then I can collect him :D
  • mymatebob - congrats on your success:T

I do have trouble getting to sleep sometimes, how about going for a walk or gardening - fresh air always seems to work for me?

well done winebox, shoppie and Mollypolly and all the new people on the wagon....it's getting big so apologies if I don't mention all the names...will try harder later!

getting to sleep used to be one of my excuses for drinking.....nowadays if I'm stuck I think of my favourite 10 songs by my favourite 10 artists and that usually does the trick...I used to have guilt problems about the chaos I'd caused and the consequences but I'm gradually coming to terms with this and looking forward to sorting it all out, however long it takes.

    keep up the good work!

Jo...head up...today's a new day....I lost track of my false starts.....
For what I've done...I start again...And whatever pain may come ...Today this ends... I'm forgiving what I've done -AF since June 2007

    Many thanks
Funny you should mention a walk as today I went for a long very pleasant walk.
Will see if that helps tonight.

I do find now that I am quite happy to start gardening now at 8 in the evening for an hour or so rather than slump in front of the TV with a glass in my hand so that can only be a good thing.

I did come off the sauce a few years ago for over a year, but I was made redundant, two members of my family had major life threatening illnesses (1 still does) so those things were an easy excuse for me to console myself with a drink.

I have found it much easier to realise that I am an alcoholic and that drink does me, my health, my wealth and my family no good at all.

Even typing that I feel even more positive.

Good luck to those who are trying to reduce or remove alcohol from your life.
Never easy, but well worth the effort for reasons that really are too numerous to mention.

Well done, Winebox, for keeping off the booze. Not easy in that situation.

Glad the robin is ok, Shoppy!

I find I need to wind down before bed and a hot bath helps. I think you need to sit and read or watch tv. When I go to bed I either watch tv, read or listen to something through my earphones and this soon has me drifting off. I also find that if I have caffeine drinks in the late afternoon or evening then my mind won't stop ticking over and I can't get to sleep. So I make a point of only drinking decaff after lunch if I want tea or coffee.

    Have a good evening everyone!
