is it not because the brain starts expecting the alcohol to take effect and when it doesn't is when you get the really bad cravings?
I think this is it. If you find you can enjoy a NA beer and don't miss the alcoholic effect then I would say go ahead and drink them. If you are drinking the NA beer because you are desperate for an ordinary beer then the NA beer will probably make things worse because you aren't getting the alcohol you crave.
The way Allen Carr thinks in his book is that if he has managed to put you off alcohol why would you even want something thats pretending to be alcohol.0 -

Mmmmmmmmm thats got me wondering now.Maybe Allen Carr hasn't managed to put me off if I enjoyed the NA beer so much.Better watch myself very carefully now because i have filled the fridge with NA Becks today.
Still, feel ok so far though and havn't had any cravings and Day 60 today.

For what it's worth, I drank a lot of coffee and a heck of a lot of diet coke....neither of which were great for me but better than the alternative.
Never liked the NA beer bit...just too close to the alternative.
I also threw myself into studying something to giving myself a distraction...I also started reading a lot more bedtime stories to the kids..mainly because it was less of an ordeal and it helped me focus on things that really matter.....
I've now read
The Hobbit
Heidi
Various Famous Five and Secret Seven books
All the Harry Potter books up to Order of the Phoenix which we're half way through....For what I've done...I start again...And whatever pain may come ...Today this ends... I'm forgiving what I've done -AF since June 20070 -

It was just my take on Allen's reason for not drinking substitutes. Don't let my theory put you off!!! (feel guilty now). Its a pity Allen can't answer himself! If you can drink NA beer and it doesn't make you crave the real stuff then go ahead. I think for some people though it would just remind them of what they're missing.0 -

I've lurked on this thread for a while and find it a nice read, I used to drink heavily, and I mean heavily.
I'm 22 now, and used to go out 2 / 3 times a week, going into work etc. Got a bit bad, went through phases of cutting it out completely, then did totally Easter Sunday 2007, was a bit drunk for my mums 50th in March this year, but aside from the odd pint or so, I really dont bother with it anymore, I wont drink in the house either.
Its interesting to note the views of others about how drinking clouded decision making, I have a few debts (old legacy ones from before i was attached) affordable but these were caused by drink, going out when i couldnt afford it etc.
I guess i will join this and lurk, post sometimes as well, I have a lot of time for people wanting to better themselves and I believe that a no alcohol mantra / philosophy can make a real difference, I dont miss it and feel good!!
I suffered with depression and had a particularly scary episode on the tablets once, thankfully im off the meds now, but still, it wasnt nice, so its always worth bearing in mind especially since alcohol is classed as a depressant.0
