Chicago Rock discrimination?

I'm no expert on this but I think you'll find that equality legislation is mainly about employment opportunities and services provided. As long men and women can have the same standard of service at Chicago Rock then they can charge differential entrance fees. As far as I'm aware it's perfectly legal to attract an under-represented group to access a facility as long as you don't discriminate in the level of service. This doesn't mean that they have to have the same service but the same standard - equality doesn't = sameness.

Chicago Rock cafe is owned by 3D if you want to complain to them, the head office is located in Milton Keynes - http://www.3d-entertainmentgroup.com/

Thanks for this. I've just sent them the following details in my email:-

    Good Evening,

Hopefully you can assist on this.

Is the below offer legal / fair within the forwarded email advertisement I received from Chicago Rock?

It is also advertised on their website in the below link.

    http://eflyers.powertext.co.uk/chicago-rock-cafe/2008/february/pampered-and-pounded/friday/st-helens/

I'm sure this should be classed as discrimination by Chicago Rock.

I have already emailed the following people complaining about this before I managed to find out that Chicago Rock is owned by yourselves.

    http://www.asa.org.uk/asa/

    http://www.oft.gov.uk/

    http://www.ogc.gov.uk/index.asp

    http://www.eoc-law.org.uk/

I'd also like you to see the below web links from some of these organisations that are very relevant to this advertisement promotion.

I've tried to contact my local Chicago Rock over this but they / the manager there do not seen interested.

    Kind Regards,

    My name

Read the EOC link in the first page. It's not legal to charge different prices on the grounds of sex alone.

This isn't their train of thought but mine but here goes... If a business does not discriminate between sexes then if 99 men come through the door and only 1 woman then they should not have any complaints as they shouldn't see one group of customers as any more desirable than any other and should therfore be happy they have 100 people in rather than splitting them into their sex groups.

The EOC link talks about pubs etc letting women in for free and charging men. Chicago Rock charges a lower rate and presumably this is how they get round the legislation.

It does concern me that the relevant authorities have important issues to look at, and if anyone spends more than five minutes looking into why Martin has to pay an extra £1 to get into his local bar I would consider it an embarrassing waste of taxpayers money!

That's what I call the 'cure for cancer' logic. If the NHS said 'we're only going to support the really important issues, like curing cancer, so sorry you'll just have to mend your own broken leg', would this make any sense?

If something's wrong, it's wrong. Of course the relevant authorities cannot look at everything, but this is a VERY clear case of discrimination (and granted, it goes on all the time).

The link also says that charging different prices for drinks for men and women is unlawful, I see no reason why this wouldn't extend to entrance fees aswell. I'd also be wary of suggesting Chicago rock are "getting round the legislation" it's more than likely they just haven't been challenged on it.

The link also says that promotions aimed at females that cannot be taken up by males are unlawful. Reduced price entry for females would surely be such a promotion.

  • it may be discrimination, but is it really that important?women pay more for some things, men pay more for others. students get discounts on things, workers don't. it goes on all the time, and even if you get somewhere with this one, there will be many more.
