Why so much hatred for 4x4's & SUV's?

I loved mine, it was used on and off road. Off road was mainly for pleasure but I'd just registered with a group which assist when emergency vehicles can't get to places due to weather etc but unfortunately had to part with it.

People forget what a vital service things like this can provide, when the bad flooding occured last year many of the volunteers travelled hundreds of miles to assist police, doctors etc.
Mine wasn't a new 4x4 of course, over 10 years old so in the higher of the two pre 1996 tax bands. One day I might be more organised...........

I dont see why the comments i made would be such a problem though.
The comments about the drugs or protitues were simpley saying if they think that free a free country means you can do whatever you want it not actually true though is it or why do we have any laws at all?
I would have thought you all could understand what I was getting at there without any problems like I say I am quite a simple person so it carnt be that complicated a thoery.
As for loving cars I do to like I said I used to do a lot of street racing , I was a car mechanic before and used to spend most of my money on modding cars.
I also would love to be able to drive any car I like and drive it like I want, but just cos its what I want dont mean I should be allowed to do it though. If I am endangering other peoples lives then I can understand why we have laws, it is to make this a better place for us all.
If we all drove around in whatever car we wanted and we had no laws then can you imagine what it would be like? I should imagine your like everybody else who uses the road and even with the laws we have inplace see somebody do something and think OMG learn how to drive you lunatic.
The accidents I have been in luckly never involved anybody else but the last one I had which I was going very fast, I was very close to hitting a car waiting to turn right off a main raod, I dont really like thinking about what would have happend.
It was since this last accident where I injured myself and was close to hitting the other car at crazy speeds which has made me think differently about many things, I have been bed bound for the last 3 years for my stupidity on the roads now imagine it was the other inocent driver I left in my situation or worse even dead.
I now think about the effects of my actions on other people alot more than I did before and understand why we have all these laws in place.
Of course laws are important. Purchasing a gun, drugs or a prostitute is illegal. Purchasing a 4x4 isn't.
To be honest, its not so much the vehicle, but who is driving it and how they are driving it.
Children have less road sense now, and I'm off again, mainly because when they are little - they are driven to school. If they walked and were taught how and where to cross the road, it would help them later when they are allowed out and about without an adult. Jaywalking is illegal in the US, it could be brought in here (more rules tho.... we have so many nowadays).
The children who run out in front of cars could quite easily run out in front of a bus, play on railway lines etc. Its all down to being brought up sensibly. Accidents will always happen sadly, and I'm sorry for your circumstances, but it is the driver who is responsible for how they drive and the pedestrian to be responsible too.
I'm fed up with being in a country which is free - in the sense that means not financially free, but free of dictatorship, when in reality, we now are living in a dictatorship - reading the papers or watching the news, to see what we can't do today! PC gone mad. A new rule/law for every day.......
I could go on, but I better not!!Genie

Putting barriers up would be a good idea especially if the requirement for them was paid for by taxing the 4 x 4 driver extra to pay for it!
Or make pedestrians have insurance.
You don't walk on the road, i won't drive on the pavement. Deal?0 -

I knew this would be the defence but thats my point though if they are dangerous and not nessisary then maybe 4x4s and other vehicles also should not be legal unless you have a permit saying you can use it as you need to use it.
I wont cover the drugs guns or prosititues again cos it only cuased people to get upset even though I was just using it to try and explain my theory that we are not a free country in the sence that you can do whatever you want, we have laws we have to abide by.
Thats my point why is it illigal to speed due to it being dangerous but yet vehicles which most of the time serve no purpouse and are dangerous are fine.
The difference between something being legal and it not being legal is enough people have said they dont like it lets make it illigal.
Things change things that are illigal now were not always illigal so to say oh but it must be ok cos its legal dont really hold its weight cos you used to be able to do things legally in the past which you carnt anymore that dont make it right.
Let keep it automotive again ay to save any upset, lets look at Bull Bars on vehicles they are now illigal yet they were not before, the that topic was agued for ages in the same way 4x4s are being agues about back then.
So who was right the people who liked Bull Bars cos they looked good and it made them feel safe or the people who were against them cos they were dangerous and server no good perpouse to road vehicles.
If its ok to do what you want aslong as its legal then it was the right thing to do to use Bull Bars before the law changed but yet once the Law changed all of a sudden its wrong this to do.
Not sure I have explained my point very well and wether it makes sence to you when you read it, I hope it does cos I really carnt be bothered with this topic anymore and wont be replying in it again but hope you understand what I am getting at.
EDIT
I was just looking for some videos of 4x4s in crash tests cos I have seen them before, but could not find what I was after but i did come accross these web pages which covers your needs of why people dont like 4x4's I wish I had just made a quick search and gave you these links before even opening my mouth on the subject it would have made life so much more simple.

No - you had better not !
1. Purchasing a gun is NOT illegal
2. Purchasing drugs is NOT illegal
3. Prostitution is NOT illegal
You were right about the 4 X 4, but perhaps you could question the mental health of a purchaser !0 -

Okay, while I'm out kerb crawling - that's ok, right?
While I'm buying cocaine - that's ok, right?
While I'm buying my gun - that's ok, right? - maybe, but if I shoot someone, which seems to be one of the awful fashions in this horrible country now, that's ok, right?
Give over, you know where I was coming from, you're just being pedantic.

Have to say I LOVE my 4X4 too - and I live in London and I drive one of my children to the minders before going on to work. I've driven in snow and off road and picked up colleagues who couldn't get past their 2" snowdrifts!
I love the safety the car affords me - Yes I'm aware that pedestrians are at greater risk but surely an element of personal responsibilty comes in here - I know how to cross a road, as to both my children. I also know how to drive carefully and with due caution. I love the high driving position which allows me a greater view of the upcoming road and any hazards there maybe.
Before I had this I drove a TT also 4 x 4 which lacked space was inpractical and encouraged boy racers to "burn me up" at lights in their hot little hatches leaving a blue haze of exhaust in their wake.
Freedom of choice is a wonderful thing - The fact that these posts get heated shows we all care passionately about something . Mrs E - You Go Girl!
I'm just all ME ME ME - and you know what I really don't mind!0 -
