Why so much hatred for 4x4's & SUV's?

The biggest issue I have with this argument is that people shouldn't be stepping out in front of cars in the first place. Instead of banning 4x4's, we should simply put barriers up between the pavement and the road, with gaps at designated crossing points. Problem solved, and it's just as logical an argument.0 -

No one loves a smart a**e - especially one who thinks they are. Its not clever nor is it witty.
Sorry I sound like that I really dont mean to sound like a smart !!!, I am a very uneducated fella and dont really know the best way of expressing my feeling, my english is terrible and I still have loads of spelling mistakes even though I try to check wht I write before posting it.0 -
All I here in that is me, me , me prooving my point these people are selfish.
I do agree with the comment of "I am more concerned with the number of people driving uninsured, untaxed, unroadworthy vehicles. Some of them unlicensed." I am too but that dont take away the point your also doing something which is endagering other peoples lives.
As for its a free country erm not really, not in the sence you mean or I would be able to take drugs witout getting arrested. I would be able to use prostitues if I wanted (Not that I would want to erw) ect ect.
Free country dont mean you can literally do as you please, if it is something which endangers other people then should there not be a law against it?
When I was taking drugs I was not harming anybody but myself I paid for the drugs by working a normal everyday job yet I get arrested for possesion of the drugs, your theory of its a free country would me I should be able to take drugs legally, do you agree?
I should be able to do anything I want with your theory of its a free country, no?
In an earlier post you compared 4x4's to guns (& smoking)
Nopw you are using illegal drugs & soliciting of prostutites as a comparrison.
We are talking about motoring here:rolleyes:0 -

I agree with you to an extent, yeah people should not just walk out into the road but what happens if they do?
What about kids who dont know better?
Accidents happen and no matter how you look at it 4x4's are more dangerous same as Trucks are even more dangerous.
Now if you have a good valid reason to use a vehicle which is more dangerous then you can justify the added dangers but other wise why would you want something more dangerous for no reason other than things like I can find it in car parks, I love the higher driving position. A couple of reasons somebody gave to why they think they deserve to be able to drive a more dangerous vehicle.0 -

But again you seem to overlook the reasoning in what I have put.
Ok then lets keep it Automotive then, if its a free country I should be able to drive as fast as I like everywhere I go, no?
The excuse people will use against this is but speeding is iliagl but thats my point prehaps if it endagers other peoples lives for no reason then maybe it shouold be iliagl also, no?
I am far from saying I am right and your wrong anyways, just explaining my veiws, wether you like them or not who cares I am nobody important and never will be some it makes no difference what I think.0 -

Unfortunately accidents happen. The reason the front of cars are designed to crumple is in acceptance that accidents happen.
Putting barriers up would be a good idea especially if the requirement for them was paid for by taxing the 4 x 4 driver extra to pay for it!Almost debt-free, but certainly even with the Banks!0 -

Think it's MrsE you should apologise to! As she has said, comparing 4x4's to illegal things that have nothing to do with cars really isn't helpful. If you've read my posts, you'll see I'm no angel in the sense that there are things that get my goat!
I have always loved cars, various types, I adore Top Gear - probably because of their passion about cars, and it is very hard to be terribly good and rush out and by a Smart car, when you really want something else. I can understand about the congestion of the roads etc. But if you HAVE to drive, then its great if you can drive something that you like and feel comfortable in.
Its the people who could use their legs for short journeys that rile me!!!
MrsE - enjoy your 4x4. There is a site where you can sign a petition for Jeremy Clarkson to be Prime Minister!! Sadly, can't remember it - it was given to me on here one day. Brilliant.
I forgive you for being a fella................ you can't help it, you were born that way, bless.Genie

"Any time a blunt instrument is used to attempt to regulate things like this the same problem will crop up. The intention of current legislation is to use the argument of CO2 emissions reduction (which I agree with) as a method of increasing taxation (which I don't). On the standard "EU" tests a vehicle with a large engine will (generally) do badly because for most of the test the engine is running at its least efficient, while smaller engines run right where they are most efficient - fairly heavily loaded with little in reserve. In the real world where power needs are generally considered higher, the smaller engine spends much of its time running harder at high revs to keep up with the larger engines that are running at their most economical.
The only way to ensure that CO2 reduction is the aim is to have a low registration fee for all cars e.g. £50 per year and then place all the remaining duty on fuel at say 60p/litre (up from the current 52p). Then the person doing 10k in a 40mpg car has an annual tax bill of £681.90 and the person doing 5k in a 20mpg car has a tax bill of.... oh £681.90, so that would be in proportion to the pollution caused then? Rational - Use less, pay less and allows members of our population to decide how they want to use less, by travelling less or by having a more economical car."
The 4x4 argument is a weak one as the Honda CRV for example is 2 wheel drive until it needs to be 4 wheel drive, same for the RAV, some pickups etc. You could say a people carrier or the van like cars such as Berlingo are higher cars and therefore deemed not so safe. The argument does not stack up there are 4wd Subaru, Ford, Audi, Golfs and a fiat Panda! which are smaller.0 -

I dont see why the comments i made would be such a problem though.
The comments about the drugs or protitues were simpley saying if they think that free a free country means you can do whatever you want it not actually true though is it or why do we have any laws at all?
I would have thought you all could understand what I was getting at there without any problems like I say I am quite a simple person so it carnt be that complicated a thoery.
As for loving cars I do to like I said I used to do a lot of street racing , I was a car mechanic before and used to spend most of my money on modding cars.
I also would love to be able to drive any car I like and drive it like I want, but just cos its what I want dont mean I should be allowed to do it though. If I am endangering other peoples lives then I can understand why we have laws, it is to make this a better place for us all.
If we all drove around in whatever car we wanted and we had no laws then can you imagine what it would be like? I should imagine your like everybody else who uses the road and even with the laws we have inplace see somebody do something and think OMG learn how to drive you lunatic.
The accidents I have been in luckly never involved anybody else but the last one I had which I was going very fast, I was very close to hitting a car waiting to turn right off a main raod, I dont really like thinking about what would have happend.
It was since this last accident where I injured myself and was close to hitting the other car at crazy speeds which has made me think differently about many things, I have been bed bound for the last 3 years for my stupidity on the roads now imagine it was the other inocent driver I left in my situation or worse even dead.
I now think about the effects of my actions on other people alot more than I did before and understand why we have all these laws in place.0 -
Think we should all sign that petition.............
It's a minefield out there... I'll stick to my Ford for now and if I win the lottery I'll buy a Land Cruiser and justify this by living in a field - a muddy field of course..Genie
