Just a note. Posted on the 21st because i thought i'd removed it. No message for a few days but it's back...
    Happy Days.

Update your anti virus software and it'll stop detecting the false positive.

  • don't worry guys, I've sorted this out with a bit of help from a neighbour who's reasonably IT savvy, we downloaded the latest PC Guard & the problem of the pigeon is no more! BUT EVEN HE CAN'T TELL ME WHAT A "STICKY" IS!!! which bings me back to my previous coments regarding nerdy language........

That's nothing exclusive to the techie board. It's a general chat forum term. Stickies are threads that are kept to the top of the board and have "Sticky" written next to them. "Sticky" because they don't drop down. He can't be that IT savvy or he's never been on a forum. What else would you call it that wouldn't require the sentence long description I used? :D Just take a look there are "sticky" threads, and they're called "sticky"s on every single board of this forum. You may want to start of reading the forum rules and welcome page if you're complaining about forum (global) wide terms being "nerdy" to get used to what forums are and typical rules and etiquette and common usages and terminology. None of us were exactly born knowing these terms and we took the time to learn or ask rather than demand that synonyms (which don't exist) are used.

  • Hey All,

This thread has been brought to my attention because of earlier posts implying that being on Martins weekly email could have installed the spyware. This is not the case, our emails are checked before we send them and only ever contain html and images. All direct links from the email are checked routinely prior to sending and during sending to ensure that nothing could have changed.

However, due to the nature of this being an open forum of discussion should you have navigated around the site and clicked and downloaded an application which was not recommended by a member of the MSE team (MSE team posts are ALWAYS written by an official MSE user and their username will ALWAYS be green) then it is up to you as the user to ensure proper virus checks and policies are adopted - much as you would expect when you download from any other site. If you aren't running up to date virus checkers/firewalls see Martin's article on getting Free Anti-virus Software plus have a browse around this board for more information regarding the topic.

As for why we appear high on google for this issue. We are a very large forum and have a good search ranking, if we are the only place out there talking about this topic it is only natural for us to appear at the top. However, just because google places us at the top of the search it does not mean we are in anyway related to the issue

Finally, can I take this moment to thank a few of the techies that have helped on this thread and others. I don't get much time to hit this board that often but the help you give others for free is such an asset to the MSE forum. So Thanks!

I guess it's a moot point since it did turn out to be a false positive after all.
