Ebay are concentrating on businesses - they don't care about the individual selling a few item here and there. After all if your monthly fees are £700 -£2000 then that would be like having several hundred small time users in terms of fees

For anyone selling as a business they can receive anything upto 40% off their FVF. So the current changes are good for them.

I can see Ebay in the future simply being an extension of retailers operations. Which means less bargains for buyers.
The fact that they will not allow -ve feedback from sellers also supports this as businesses have lots of -ve feedback and don't bother leaving -ve for buyers as they continue to sell without being effected. whereas the the occasional seller would suffer from just a few -ve feedback.

I think the occasional seller will move to something like Ebid.

I'd recommend everyone who sells to educate themselves about the true cost of the fees, especially now that the changes have been applied. I've been using the fees calculator at the link below, and it also incorporates paypal charges too. If you're like me, you're paying 10% to feebay (paypal included since it's the same company).

eBay is still increasing their take and not being overly transparent about it. Has Watchdog covered this yet? I know they had Richard from eBay on working lunch but I don't think they covered the story particularly well.

Ebay put all their info on the relevant pages and people can choose to access that or not.

Whilst I don't agree with what they are doing I hardly think this is an attempt to hide anything and I don't see why Watchdog would be particularly interested. It is ebay's site and they can charge what they like and if we don't like that then we can walk. It is true that many sellers, even large scale ones don't actually keep abreast of changes, but the option to do so is there if they choose.

We have been discussing this now for weeks, yet there are still people joining the ebay discussion thread on ebay and asking 'what changes?'

I do believe there is a fundemental difference (I can't spell that!)

Ebay is just a selling site, it is just one of many ways we can choose to sell goods. A bank could be argued is a necessity especially with the move towards paying basic benefits and pensions by transfer and not in cash. If I gave up ebay tomorrow (and it is soooo tempting) it wouldn't matter, if I was forced to cancel all my bank accounts tomorrow it would be an entirely different matter as I would be forced to pay utility bills in cash and incur penalty charges for not using DDs, I couldn't take a mobile phone contract that required DDs nor could I buy a lot of things online as I would have no way of making payment if I was limited to cash.

We don't need ebay anymore than we need say car boot sales, so we can walk if we choose.

Frankly whilst I am irritated beyond belief by ebay's attempts to shrug off us smaller sellers I actually don't think there is a story there at all, the Gas price increase for normal consumers is of more concern.

  • Are they really trying to shrug off the small sellers?

My logic. I have 300 items to list, just old gear I am clearing out. I would have paid £30 listing fee on the old prices, I will pay £20 under the new, all starting at 99p. If they all sell I will pay an extra £6.75 in fees under the scheme, so will be quids in. They have to sell for more than £444 for me to lose. Also I would not list them all under the old pricing, but the new pricing has reduced the upfront risk so I will take a bigger gamble.

It is not all bad but yes some will lose. You have to look at what you don't sell. Take you listing & sales for Jan under the old pricing & compare how much you would have paid under the new. Don't forget to include the items that didn't sell

But for me Ebay has to matter as I rely on it to boost my income. I have a low paid job, minimum wage and work fulltime, but still it doesn't pay my bills.
I got laid off my other job last July and it took me four months and many applications to get a new job.
My other job was over £1 an hour more which made a big difference to me, and now all I can find in this area is jobs with minimum wages.

Now the gas, electric, groceries, and whatever next has risen, then I'm far worse off than several years ago, so yes, I rely on ebay to make a feq quid to supplement my income.

I have tried E-Bid to no avail, car boots, car boots on the internet, google ad words for my own site, no customers yet  , but Ebay is where the audience is unfortunately.

Well I just sold an item on ebay and it cost me 10p less to list it than the old way, and there was no difference to the Final Value Fee, it showed as 21p like it did in january.

I'm even more puzzled now as I seem to be better off where most people say they are worse off.
    What's the catch??;)
  • I have a 'few' ebay sites with items already listed before the price hike, will they honour the FVF fees quoted at the time of listing or will the new fees apply if they sell after the price change date?

Have you tried Gumtree.co.uk they are good for selling and free too although only buy it now prices as its not an auction site.
