value tomato ketchup tastes way way better than you would imagine... I buy it regularly
Value Fresh Orange juice very nice, both the fresh and long life variety
Value chocolate digestives, recommended
Value mushy peas, with a teaspoon of mint sauce stirred in, very nice
Value beef stock cubes, I have never made gravy with them, but sprinkle them over my roast pots when they are cooking..... wonderful.
Value sage and onion stuffing mix, also very good.2011: £10 Sports Direct Voucher, Peppa Pig Wii Game, Trivial Pursuit Card Game, £100 Chat magazine win, Dance workout dvd, Grease wii game,0 -
when i was a student i lived on 3 meals;
pasta with tinned chopped tomatoes
rice with tinned rataouille (sp?)
jacket potato with a tine of tuna over the top
this is a good idea though - i would of thought you will save some money. sadly my nearest supermarket was waitrose so i was always skint!!0 -
This is quite an interesting idea... I do find that the cheapest way to save money on food is to cook some soup with the cheapest vegetables you can find (season vegetables) and blend everything. A blender costs about £5 from Argos. The soup, if you stick in the fridge only after it has cooled down, will last you for up to 3 days. And it is healthy.
Well, but this was not why I decided to post. You may also be interested in the Great "disguised" own brand hund thread that has been around for some time. You can save money and get cheaper goods.

PS: I seem to remember a thread about value stuff, but cannot find it. One useful thread to save some money is the Lidl Aldi one, if you are fortunate enough to live close to one.0 -

I agree re some value things being more expensive than regular items on special offer - this week it was cheese and butter.
Also love the oats and tinned peaches at 16p. Really interesting thread.0 -
Went to Tescos today. Value stuff bought:
Crunchy peanut butter (4/5, just had some on toast)
Cornflakes (untried yet but at 29p I'll give them a go!)
Margerine (I hate all marg anyway, got it for OH who won't notice any difference, 39p)
Oats
Peppers (98p for 5, so i'll use up all the green ones in a curry/casserole)2015 wins: Jan: Leeds Castle tickets; Feb: Kindle Fire, Years supply Ricola March: £50 Sports Direct voucher April: DSLR camera June: £500 Bingo July: £50 co-op voucher0 -

I'm a student, and a few of us in my acccomodation are trying a Tesco Value week - as much as possible, only eat Value food... The idea is to see what Value food is worth eating, and whether the savings outweigh the costs! Hopefully this will help anyone who is considering buying Value, whatever their reasons!
We started yesterday (18/02/08) and are continuing until Friday.
As for the ratings:
0 = Couldn't eat it
1 = Ate because I was hungry
2 = Tastes somewhat like food
3 = Quite a lot worse than Tesco Own Brand
4 = Slightly different to Own Brand
5 = Tastes too good to be Value
Monday:
Breakfast:- None - oops!
- Savoury egg bites - Occasional gristly bit, but otherwise fine. 4/5, 89p for 12.
- Back bacon sandwich - The rashers are a mixture of smoked, unsmoked, and sweetcured. Pretty salty. 3/5, 80p for ~ 6 rashers. Bread - Nothing special, somewhat sweet though. 4/5, 37p.
- Apple Pies - Tasty, but more sauce than apple pieces. 4/5, 37p for 6.
- Chicken and vegetable pie - Pastry only tasted of flour, very little filling, but filling was tasty. However, quality of pastry and quantity of fiiling means I would never buy these again. 1/5, 74p for 4.
- Oven Chips - Very sweet, otherwise edible. 3/5, 41p for 1.5kg.
- Baked Beans - Watery sauce, but otherwise tasty. 4/5, 20p can.
- Lemonade - Dilute, but tasted of lemon. 3/5, 20p 2L.
Breakfast:- Toast and Butter - Typical toast, not as nice as fresh bread, but nothing wrong with it. 4/5, 37p.
- Back bacon sandwich - This time the rashers tasted unsmoked, and the whole sandwich was pretty impressive. 5/5!
- Apple Pie - See Monday. 4/5.
- Pork Chop - A lot of fat, but otherwise tasted of pork! 4/5, £3.31 for 4.
- Tinned potatoes - Tasted no different to any other tinned potatoes I've eaten. 5/5!, 25p can.
- Tinned carrots - Tasted like they were half digested. 1/5, 12p can.
- Tinned sweetcorn - Tasted ok, though didn't really feel like they had any health benefits. 3/5, 15p can.
- Gravy granules - Very watery, hardly tasted of anything. 1/5, 34p tub.
- Tinned syrup sponge - syrup was nice, but hardly any of it there! Sponge tasted like breadcrumbs. Disgusting, and before cooking it looked like cat food. 1/5, 48p can.
- Instant custard - saved the sponge from being chucked away, however very artificial. Thickened nicely though. 3/5, 8p sachet.
Best of luck with your challenge......it sounds as though you're giving yourselves plenty of variety, so your health should be fine:j If you're trying to save some money, why not get your housemates to gather some coupons together and use them with your weekly shop in Tesco's......lots of threads re this one on other forums........Good Luck with it anyway:TSaved £££'s using coupons/discount codes/cashbacksDone the Edinburgh Moonwalk 2010(yeh !)Signed up to do....Woman's 10K Glasgow runGreat Scottish Run and St Andrew's Hospice 6K run and Midnight walk (13 mile):A:kisses2:0 -
