in our local town there are 2 high school next door to each other, my granddad used to walk his dog past the schools and always picked up lots of pennies, every couple of days he'd empty his penny pocket and have at least £1 he used it to buy his daily paper (not sure the newsagent liked being paid in pennies tho!!)

When I was at school you would get bullied for picking up pennies and the older kids would throw them at the younger kids and geeks! who said its the best days of your life!?
The very best is sometimes what nature gives us for free.

  • well, i've wanted to post this somewhere on MSE for ages...

last year i picked up every single coin i saw from anywhere on the floor- i'd promised to put it all towards a single bottle of the best wine i could buy with the cash at new year- But, seeing as though i'd got £61, i compromised and got two fantastic french reds from an amused independent wine seller in halifax!

my girlfriend and i toasted all the chavs and fools who chuck it all away when they get off buses, and leave shops.
    thanks again...

riding a bike to work helps a bit....

This year i've already amassed just over £8 - looking good!!

My friend only picks up silvers and above - but i get anything upto £1 a day in coppers - its amazing how much people drop and cant be bothered to pick up - and look under benches with holes/gaps in them - cash falls out of pockets ;)

  • I pick up pennies if I can be bothered. I found a wallet once with a full wage packet in which I handed in to the bloke who had lost it, he looked at me like I had stolen it and slammed the door in my face, I was about 8 at the time.

The biggest load of cash I have found was £200 hanging out of a cash machine but my wife made me hand it in, it still annoys me when I think about it.

About 4 years ago I went to bank machine in the hospital lobby while visiting my friend who had leukaemia, and the screen said "do you wish another service?" automatically i hit "no" and someones card popped out! If I wasnt so honest i could have cleared their account of every pound they had! (but i wouldnt have been able to live with myself)

As for pennies......" pick them up, save them up then use them up!":D

(thats my motto, tho like some depends where i am and who with! ;) )

This happened to me once with a £2 coin and the couple in their 20's who had stuck it to the floor were openly laughing at me so I went home and got a hammer and chisel and went back. I tapped the coin with a swift blow and picked it up. I knocked on the door and said thanks !!
    That'll teach the buglers....
  • People don`t only throw away money in the UK. I just returned from 3 days in Spain (free trip----long story) and whilst there I found....2 euro coins, a 2 cent, a 1 cent and a 50 euro NOTE!!!!! That`s worth about £42. It paid for the taxi to the airport!
