Pick bumping is a real problem, but to be honest, a bigger problem is lock snapping, because it quicker.
Bumping a lock takes time and you need a bit of expertise to do it. Where as lock snapping, can take as little as 4 seconds and doesn't require any specialist tools.
Over 70% of the burglaries we see, the burglar has gone through the back door. So whatever you do, make sure you have got good security at the rear of your property.
Also, we've noticed a spate or burglaries where burglars have got it through open doors and windows whilst the owner has been inside. So please do be careful.0 -
If you want to stop a fireman armed with an axe or sledge hammer, you will need to look at adding steel reinforcement to the door and the frame. If an inward opening door is forced, it tends to be the frame or door that gives in, rather than the lock.
There was allegedly a door in a Manchester council tower block that defied both the Police AND the Fire Brigade for over half an hour. The empty property had been used for selling drugs hence the criminals had fortified the door by installing six inches of reinforced concrete behind it. When the Police did gain entry all that they found was an exit hole to the flat below. The drug dealers had of course got away.
There is an excellent burglar resistant door shown on You Tube. The door is made in Turkey but at the rates things are going we now need them over here.
Incidentally a friend lodged in digs in Tremorfa (near Splott) in Cardiff. When he got home from work the UPVC front door was flinging wide open. At first he thought he had forgotten to lock-up but when the Police inspected the door they could see that it had been forced or sprung. The door was a cheap one that only had three-point-locking. Somehow the main lock had been sprung and the two "keeps" that were little angle brackets made from die-cast alloy had broken.
Items stolen were the man's two month old dual-core processor laptop (£400) and also his camera and video player. The landlady's ancient CRT TV that showed people with green faces and was worth about 50p was not touched.
A few months later the man's new bike was stolen from work. CCTV showed a hoodie alighting from the passenger side of a van. The hoodie had a large pair of bolt-cutters and he walked straight up to the bike rack and cut the lock that fastened the bike to the bike rack. That was £300 down the pan so in effect the bloke was working long hours just to feed burglars. OK there are bolt-cutter-resistant chains available for motorcycles but these are expensive and too heavy to carry on a pedal cycle.
Britain is broken so take care! Avoid owning new and attractive items and make do with downmarket rubbish. Even if one has the most secure car in the world it can still be "keyed" (scratched deliberately) Gated communities are the new big thing these days.0 -
Lock picking is a hobby of mine and I haven't been at it very long, clearly I'm not going to advertise how on here but I can get into ANY door with a euro cylinder lock using two common hand tools in under 15 seconds with very little damage or noise, doesn't matter if it's anti bump or some super high security model with 10 locking points either, Yale cylinder locks in about the same time with absolutely no damage, a five lever lock would take me a long time though0

Helped by Amazon. It's amazing that anyone can buy a euro snapper on Amazon from £15. Who needs the dark net when Amazon offers everything your average burglar needs?smugbear2007 wrote: »I traded as a locksmith for a year back in 2009 and you would be scared how easy it is to gain access to upvc style euro cylinders ... I would recommend multi t locks dimple which are much harder to pick (15mins).
I guess you mean the Mul-T-Lock XP0
