  • Can anyone recommend any books or really good websites on how to write in a scholarly manner for my dissertation? From feedback from my proposal they said I need to write much better, which is very true, I am awful at writing! Thanks.

I just posted a message but it seems it has not gone through...

I too am doing a dissertation (I wonder what possessed me to do one!) and feel like its getting ontop of me now.

I'm lucky enough to have a supervisor who is off on holiday a whole 6 weeks before the deadline, and will not mark anything after the end of feb!!! (to the lovely lady who said she treats her students like her own children, I hope they know how lucky they are!)

Someone pass me a tissues please :(

Oh dear that's awful! Aurora Borealis who posted up there ^ marks dissertations and I'm sure she'd be happy to read it through for you if you need a hand. (She's my mum so I'm allowed to offer her services like that :D )

Ames, can you email your supervisor to ask for help with your writing? They're there to help you pass so I'm sure they can give you some resources to guide you  I'm afraid I've been trained to write in a scientific style so I can't help very much.

PD I'm planning on a weekend of booze filled rugby fun too! Well, that's my Saturday afternoon/night anyway. Friday night, Sat morning and Sunday afternoon will be spent back in the library. *Sigh*

EDIT: I forgot to add, I've finished my intorduction, hooray! Well, obviously there'll be more to add when I've finished the whole thing but until I do, I can move onto a different section. Feels like progress!

It's very therapeutic to write down what you've done everyday, makes me feel like I'm getting somewhere :D

I found the biggest motivation to complete my dissertation was lack of time. Wait long enough, and eventually panic will set in.

"Oh my God I've got 29 hours to write 15000 words on something I know nothing about. Best crack on then!"

Of course, leave it too long and it's: "Oh well, I've failed. I can't possibly write it in 6 hours so I might as well not bother."

    It's a fine line.... :rotfl:
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Absolutely. I seldom do anything in life before the "I can just about get it done if I start now and don't sleep for two days" deadline. :o
