Hi Alm, that's really hard, my uni is very supportive, I wouldn't have managed without it (having a family complicates things, lol). Losing people who want to carry on must be gutting too!

Bestpud, yeah I have a tutorial soon so might ask at the end of that. I just have a lot of stuff to be doing for the next couple of months. Forward planning might just not be practical for me.

I've just begun the 3rd year and am beginning to think of ideas for the dissertation. The proposal doesn't have to be handed in until January but I want to get it done sooner.

What are other people's deadlines looking like?

My proposal has to be in tomorrow. I have a title (albeit a work in progress) so I'm pleased about that. I'm just terrified in general now though

My proposal was due in the end of April. I got it in in August, haha. My advisor was really nice about it, mostly because of the funding problems I was having, but I'm seeing her tomorrow for yet another rethink of the plans. I'm getting to the point where I'm getting terrified I'll run out of time, cause every time I go to see her, she sends me away to research something entirely different instead.

Wouldn't it be great if the dissertation didn't count for pretty much all your grade and therefore the rest of your life?

I'm just starting out on my MSc dissertation in Social Research. It's been motivating to read some of this stuff, I was feeling this week like I will never get anywhere with it but I'm going to just read some stuff and make some notes! My undergrad dissertation a couple of years ago was a nightmare, I remember that I left stuff to late (as usual) and it took over my life for a while, really want to try and avoid that with this one!

I can see your point about the junior doctors, it's probably why I'm going in to nursing. It's a much easier course ;) .

    Hi all..

First time I've come across this thread. Im a Third Year History student (Undergrad) and my final deadline for my dissertation is the 20th February. It's a bit pants really, because a lot of the other departments @ my Uni don't have to submit their final draft until the end of April! Lucky sods!

I keep telling myself 'oh, that's ages away..' but I know it's going to creep on me really fast. I need to seriously start drafting my chapters. My supervisor wants to see at least one draft of a chapter by the 1st week in November, which isn't far away  . It's just a nightmare organising all my sources.. the primary, the secondary, the statistics, the tables... argh!

I need to start tackling them all this weekend in order to make sense of it and actually start writing something!

ETA: It's expected to be around 12, 000 words and divided into 4 chapters.
    - Intro (Literature review)
    -Chapter 1
    -Chapter 2
    -Conclusion

I did my Literature review as part of the 'dissertation preparation' module at the end of last year, but it was rubbish and I only got around 58%. I really need to completely re-do it which is going to be time consuming. Arghhh...
  • I am doing my dissertation on the media's influences on attitudes towards body modification in contemporary culture. So far it will have the following chapter structure:
    Abstract
    Contents
    Introduction
    Literature/ theory review
    Methodoligical chapter
    conclusion
    appendix's
    bibliography

Am I missing any other potential chapter titles?

Do you need a findings section before conclusion? To present your basic results before you draw conclusions, (ensures transparency). I did, but mine was primary research, so you might not. How long it is may make a difference too, mine was 10,000 words.
