    Might be helpful to some...

The video shows one adjustment! although most uPVC door hinges have more than one adjustment to help correct/raise a door, some adjusting screws are at the bottom of the hinge, others are concealed behind small plastic snap on covers.

I am of the view leave i to the experts in everything unless is it very quick or very easy to do. We all are expert at doing something in our daily lives. We would be better served doing what we are good at and not leaving the country full of shoddy workmanship. If we can do overtime or a bit of out of hours better to do that using the skills we have to pay for the experts to do it...

ldevlin - i was always told as a child that if you have nothing constructive to say then don't say anything at all. Why would we pay £75 for a locksmith to change a cylinder when I can change it myself for £12.75?

eco-friendly - thanks very much, much appreciated!!

Call a decent upvc repair company or a good Local locksmith avoid the call centers like the pluage.
  • Hi every1.

Got a question for the people in the know!

The front upvc door handle is not functioning at all, therefore i cannot get the door open to remove/check the mechanism. Will i be able to access it through taking the door off its hinges? or is there another way?

Any help would be massively appreciated.

    Thanks

    Jo

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
    hi guys

i think i have a composite door with a mortice lock. my front door key is stuck in the barrel. it will lock and unlock the door fine but i carnt get the key out. it seems that it need to turn slight more to get it vertical but it wont budge.

i tried undoing the screws holding in the euro lock but because i carnt get the key out i suspect that the barrel wont come out. does anyone have any ideas please?

    thanks
  • My front door won't lock properly. It has a multi-point locking system but only the barrel lock works now. The hooks and bolts no longer secure the door.
I am so broke I do not have the money to call out a professional. Obviously I am worried about the security of my home and also if one day the barrel fail and I get locked out.
Any advice please! I have thought about removing and refitting the same Multi-point lock system but I wanted some advice first. I don't want to make the problem worst.
  • Thanks to the Moneysaving Expert forums for leading me to upvc-hardware.co.uk where got a replacement for my door lock which I have now installed and is working perfectly

ok 1st thing to do is open the door. with the door open lift the handle and watch the hooks and rollers along the door edge moving. do they all move approx the same amount? or do any seem to only go half way and then you need to push them with your hand to help them? if this is the case use 3in 1oil to lube behind all the hooks and rollers without taking strip from the door. crap can build up behind hooks and rollers.

if ALL hooks and rollers do still not move when handle is lifted then I am afraid you will have to remove cylinder, remove handles, undo CERTAIN screws from the
strip and remove it to see which part is failing. It can require a new lockcase(commonly known as a gearbox which is where the handle and euro cylinder lock attach to. i can talk you through this if this is the case.

if you life the handle and all hooks and rollers are moving freely to their maximum limit by themselves then you know the locking mechanism IN THE door is all ok. so the problem must lie in the frame side where the keeps and strikers are. (these are in the frame where the hooks and rollers slot into on the frame. if these are not lined up properly then when you lift the handle and move the hooks and rollers they are catching on the keeps and strikers. the handle is normally stiff and you have to lift/force the handle up to be able to lock the door.
the way to fix this is 3fold. 1. remove all strikers from door frame undoing screws. replace centre latch deadbolt keep 1st. does door lock smoothly? if yes then attach another 1 and so on. if not then you need to adjust the position of the keep so the hooks/rollers locate into it. knowing which way is a bit of an art form. use a bit of paint on the roller to see where it is catching on the keep when you lift the handle.
if this doesnt work and the door has dropped badly and is miles out then you need to adjust the hinges by removing hinge caps and using an allen key to lift the door. if hinges are not adjustable then im afraid you need to toe and heel it which means removing glass etc.

lock cases cost £30-£60. whole new strips with hooks and rollers cost about £!00+. toe and heeling done by a professional is £40-£70. the cheapest short term fix is to remove the keep that is catching if only 1. or the dirt cheap way is to fit 2 sash jammers top and bottom of door and exit through another door when you go out.
