New Zeland and Sweedish banks both charge their customers for transactions.
In Britain people want free banking and they get the service that they pay for.Amazon sellers club - member number 63.
January challange - sell 10 items. 0 down, 10 to go!0 -
Ditto. The cost to each individual customer of lost interest is nothing compared to the benefit of free banking IMHO.0

£1.75 to get to our own money from a cash mashine? £32 quid if they can't move the money in time (and 20% of bank account holders pay these charges).
I would say that British banks also charge for their services - albiet in a much more dishonest and stealthy way.
I'm also not convinced that banks in Sweden do charge - although I am pretty sure that this is the case in New Zealand.0 -
Simply get everyone to write a cheque for £0.01 to a friend - if everyone does this the system will collapse under the volume of cheques and they will have to reform the workings of it.0

Point taken, but as with all other reforms, the customers will end up paying for it (including those of us who use the system without paying charges as present) :rolleyes:Gwlad heb iaith, gwlad heb galon0 -

And £32 if "they can't move the money in time"? You mean £32 if the customers spend money which they don't have the right to spend?0 -
If a direct debit or standing order is returned UNPAID because it takes 9 days to 'clear' a cheque, the customer is charged between 25 to 35 quid.
Use a barclays debit card in a lloyds machine, and it will cost you 1.75.
Also, in Sweden, New Zealand and pretty much everywhere, you legally have the right to choose how you are paid by your employer - i.e. cash, cheque, direct transfer, camels etc... In this country we don't have that right. We can ask, but if the employer refuses, then bad luck - that is their right. Most employers pay by direct transfer into a - you guessed it - bank account - so what choice do we have but to give these ungrateful, money grabbing institutions our hard earned cash for little or no return? None. If I had the choice and I still chose to use banks, then I would accept that I would have to pay for it.
As it is, it charges for services that I don't want.0 -

Sorry, must disagree on this point. My main account is with Barclays but my nearest ATM (free) is a branch of Lloyds - I have NEVER been charged for using an ATM of Lloyds, HSBC or NatWest.Gwlad heb iaith, gwlad heb galon0 -
SNAP. I'm with Lloyds & I've never been charged for using Barclays. The OH is with Barclays & has never been charged for using Lloyds. BTW the same applied when we fitted Nationwide into the equation.0
