I have a Nexus 10 which is fabulous but can only use Wi-Fi. That's usually ok: at home, at friends' and in hotels, but I'm staying in a flat in France soon without its own Wi-Fi. In the UK I use virgin media for my smartphone.
Does anyone have an idea of how I can get WiFi at all (preferably at low cost) and for just a couple weeks abroad?

Try three their 123 sim gives you cheap 3g or4g when abroad. Search on their site for " Feel At Home destinations" not sure if France is on it.
Any posts by myself are my opinion ONLY. They should never be taken as correct or factual without confirmation from a legal professional. All information is given without prejudice or liability.

I did a search for tethering on the virgin website which came up blank, but I've not spoken to anyone yet. I used to have an app called tablet talk but I removed it in a spring clean. Maybe that's what I need?

Why would you pay for something that is already on Android - it is called TETHERING and that is what it does - it "tethers" your two devices together to allow you to use the connection that your Phone has to send data from your tablet via the phone !!

  • There are several ways of tethering. You can set the phone as a wifi hotspot and connect to it via wifi. You can plug the phone in via usb and use it as a modem. You can use the phone as a bluetooth modem which is slow as mentioned above.

Tethering is a bit of a game. Some providers block it, some ask you not to use it, some allow it. You need the correct settings - APN, username and password - with some but not with others.

I bought a tablet and i've been using it, tethering my phone internet. The problem is (even here in the UK) that the phone battery doesn't last long while tethering. I've got a Samsung Galaxy 2 and tethering drains the battery really fast.

I was thinking of a different PAYG SIM for my tablet, which will be in use only when I use the tablet outside my home (i've got wifi there) and hopefully, won't be that expensive. Even if it's more expensive than usually, it is going to be used not so often. I don't want to have another contract as I am going to be using it only occasionally, let's say, about an hour per day, not every day. But there are days when I might need to use it for 3 hours, let's say. .

    Any ideas?

P.S. In August I'm going to France for a month - how about there?

I would seriously consider a THREE WiFi hotspot at £5.49 per month with no upfront costs and this gives 1G data per month - but you have to be a THREE customer to get this deal !!

But Mila does not state who his supplier is - it could well be THREE ?

Unless it is a 30 day contract, it is expressly what the OP did not want.
Though it is not a terrible idea(depending on the length of the contract). The MiFi unit can be unlocked for use with a local data SIM in France.
