Hi Lisa, Congratulations!! Have just read through this thread and I feel really pleased for you. I had a few years of social phobia so know what it's like and the news that you're going out walking is great, things can only get better!! Have you thought about using exercise videos? I used Rosemary Conley videos, they're not too painful. She also does diet books and recipes that you can get from the library
Don't forget if you do have the odd bad day or cheat a bit with the diet just think how far you've come, you're doing so well, keep it up.
  • Anyone who thinks increasing the amount of exercise they do will make them lose weight permanently should read this link

To understand what makes us fat try spending the hour and a half listening to this Berkley lecture by Gary Taubes.
The Quality of Calories: What Makes Us Fat and Why Nobody Seems to Care

If you can persuade you library to buy it the newly published book
The Diet Delusion: Challenging the Conventional Wisdom on Diet, Weight Loss and Disease is well worth studying. I've still got a couple of hundred pages to read but since I altered my diet to severely reduce the carb element I've lost 10lbs which is pretty good going for 2 weeks, especially as I don't feel hungry and have lost the craving for food & alcohol. I'm not doing the Atkins type regime but basing my diet on this Lowcarbohydrate Diet. For Weight Loss and Good Health.
    Let them eat fat
One of America’s most lauded science writers challenges what we think we know about diet and obesity

If people haven't already bought and read The Diet Delusion as yet, the above link is a summary. The book is fairly hard going and perhaps you may grasp better what he is saying if you read the Epilogue first as knowing where he is going may make the reading easier.

“So why is it when we add carbohydrates to the diet we get hungry, if not irritable, lethargic, and depressed, but this will not happen when we add only protein and fat? How can the amount of calories be the critical factor?” In fact, Taubes found many studies showing that carbs do not satisfy the appetite, they actually increase it, bringing on the desire for more food.

it is so hard as there are so many different scientists, "experts", schools of thought etc... saying this is best and true or this system or this way. I don't know what is right sometimes- you can't believe or trust them all. Is it the one that makes the best argument. I dunno...

How you doing OP? I managed to drag myself and my BF to the park and back today for a walk which is a rarity!

Gary Taubes in his book The Diet Delusion is simply relating the scientific evidence about the role of insulin.

If we want to lose weight, the one fundamental requirement to increase the flow of fatty acids out of adipose tissue and so decrease the amount of fat in our fat tissue, is to lower the concentration of insulin in the bloodstream.

You can see from recent research below, the evidence supporting low carb diets is increasing but it will a long time before health professionals stop spouting dogma and adopt evidence based practices.

Carbohydrate restricted diets (CRD) consistently lower glucose and insulin levels and improve atherogenic dyslipidemia [decreasing triglycerides and increasing HDL cholesterol (HDL-C)]. We have previously shown that male subjects following a CRD experienced significant increases in HDL-C only if they were consuming a higher intake of cholesterol provided by eggs compared to those individuals who were taking lower concentrations of dietary cholesterol.

Low–Glycemic-Load Diet Better Than Low-Fat Diet for Weight Loss in Those With High Insulin Secretions

Effects of a high-protein ketogenic diet on hunger, appetite, and weight loss in obese men feeding ad libitum In conclusion, the low-carbohydrate component of the high-protein regimen affects subjective motivation to eat, and volunteers feel less hungry and consume less energy, at least in the short term. ....This regimen appears to reduce calorie intake without increased hunger, and, therefore, it promotes compliance. The current evidence would support the use of such diets, in the short term at least, as a measure to reduce mortality and morbidity in obese subjects who would benefit from a modest weight loss.

Over all studies relevant for the purpose taken together, it is evident that intervention with low GI/GL, high unavailable carbohydrate diets do associate significantly with reductions in body weight.

There is absolutely no doubt that exercise helps alleviate depression. See Up and running! How exercise can help beat depression
The reason for the link to the Gary Taubes article is not there to discourage anyone from taking exercise but to prevent them having unrealistic expectations regarding permanent weight loss as a result of indulging in vigorous sustained exercise. The evidence that exercise will help you lose weight and maintain that weight loss is conspicuous by it's absence.

But folks will think I'm being influenced by today's breaking news re: ADsI]anti- depressants[/I when in reality I've felt this way for a couple of weeks:o

    Hi Lisa,
Just read your thread and can relate to it in so many ways. Since I was a teenager, my weight has gone up and down like a yo-yo, I've been Kate Moss skinny (7st 10lbs) and officially obese (13st) with a BMI of 32 (had problems getting pregnant, got very depressed...and comfort-ate). It's taken me about 25 years to get to a weight I'm happy with. I realise now that i had to get my head sorted first, because otherwise I just kept on with the depressing cycle of losing and gaining. The book Savvy Sue mentioned (The No diet diet) was really helpful in that respect, and also, as others have said, regular exercise.
I wish you all the best, and I really hope you find a permanent solution that works for you!

The report on which the "anti-depressants are less effective than thought" news headlines are based is an "Open Access" document.

It is available here The editors summary is worth reading.

I find it is usually better to read what the actual paper says first before considering what journalists (and spokespersons from Big Pharma) have to say.

Often the interpretation is some way away from what has been actually demonstrated.
