New Car No Tax Disc
Hi
Me and my husband are looking into buying a car but a lot we can afford have MOT but no Tax, the thing is, if we were to buy a car without tax would we be able to drive it straight home and leave it on the drive till we get a tax disc or would we have to get it picked up and transport back home?
Thanks

No you would be committing an offence it must be taxed and insurance to be driven on a public road.
And/or towed !!!
You would not be legal to drive it or tow it home. If it is not too far and you can do it under cover of darkness, you might aswell go for it, I doubt you will be caught.
If there is no rush you can buy it and ask the seller to wait a day or two for your insurance certificate to arrive in the post. Then tax it.
Or
Go to a highstreet insurance broker who will be able to issue you with a covernote there and then, you can then tax it at P.O. and drive it home 100% legal.0 -
It sounds like the sellers are reducing the price and taking out the tax disc for a refund. You could try asking the seller if they'll include the tax disc at cost (value of months left) if they still have it as it saves them the hassle of getting a refund, and saves you the hassle of getting it taxed.0

One we have seen is from a dealer which is about 18 miles away, we will be going to see it at around 6pm, but as we have absolutely no luck at all we are bound to get pulled.
And the insurance company is an online one so we would be able to get a cover note printed out but I dont want to be getting the insurance when im not even sure if we are getting the car.0 -

Go at crack of dawn, buy the car, give money, get the keys, get the V5 new owners portion and fill in the v5 form for seller to send away, get yourself on the internet and print out the covernote and hot foot it to the post office with the MOT and covernote - go back to car and collect it.
Only possible problem I can think would be the post office rejecting the self-printed covernote? I am not sure on that issue.0 -

If selling a car it is crucial to you as the seller that you obtain the buyers details, complete the relevant bits on the V5, and you send it away, not the buyer.0 -
If you cannot afford the tax on a car are you sure you can actually afford it to begin with?0

Out of the cars we have looked at that we can afford dont have tax, ones with tax that are similar in make and model are much more than it would cost to buy the car and the tax seperately as we would only be buying 6 months tax to begin with.
If that makes sense.0 -

Officially the Post Office should not accept a printed covernote from the internet, it must be an official one with a watermark. though it does depend on how much attention the PO clerk pays to it when they look at it. Best thing is to get insurance company to post it out to you for next day delivery and go back and pick up the car the next day.* Rainbow baby boy born 9th August 2016 *
