I think Sainsburys sell their own pasta sauce for around 36p? And presumably the others would sell a similar cheap one as part of their basics/value range.
If you want homemade, it's really simple:
Simmer 1x400g tin chopped tomatoes in a saucepan for about 15 minutes until looking 'glossy' and reduced slightly. Add 3 tblsp olive oil, continue to simmer for 5 mins. Add 1 tsp of sugar to avoid the natural acidity, plus mixed/fresh herbs - basil/oregano etc. Mix well and serve. Delicious!LBM - March 2009, DMP Start - April 2009

I make a basic tomato sauce, onion, garlic, tin of tomatoes, oregano. It's nice with a touch of paprika in too.0 -
Hi Linda,
There are lots of recipes on this thread that should help:
Meatballs (and sauces)
I'll add your thread to that one later to keep the suggestions together.

I too make a basic tomato sauce similar recipe to the above one posted.
I did get some cheap arabitta sauce from co-op its was reduced and got some saving too so paid about 20p for 2 pots and froze them these were very nice with tin of toms added for meatballs and spag.0 -
If I want to make a quick tomato sauce I make either of these
1) asda sp passata(could use tin of chopped tomatoes instead), lemon juice, tsp of sugar and some rosemary (usually dried but fresh if i have it)
or
2) asda sp passata, balsamic vinegar, tsp of sugar and some fresh or dried basil.
Simmer for 5 mins. Job done!!0 -
Hi ive been given this recipe by a family member and its toooo good to keep to myself so here you go ,also meatballs are baked not fried so not as fatty as some recipes and you can omit the salami to reduce the fat content further x
Meatballs
- beef mince, slice of bread, worcester sauce, salami, salt and pepper.
Run the bread under the tap and wring it out a bit. Put all your ingredients in a bowl and mix together. Shape into balls and bake in oven at 170 for about 15/20 mins.
Tomato sauce - Tin toms, beef or chicken stock cube (depending on how light you want it) tbsp plain flour, onion, 2 carrots, 2 cloves garlic, butter or oil for frying, tsp sugar, tsp salt, black pepper, basil and thyme.
Roughly chop onion, peel and grate carrots, peel garlic. Fry onion for about 5 mins, add salt, sugar carrot and crushed garlic and fry for about 2 mins. Add flour and crushed stock cube. stir through until all soaked up. Add toms, fill tin with water and add this too. Simmer for about 20 mins then blend with a stick blender if it is too thick add a bit more water. Add your meatballs to this and then serve with pasta.
You can add a chopped chilli at same time as your onion. If you have any peppers to use up you can add this at the same time as well. It can also take any red pesto or tomato puree that needs using up as well.0 -
mmm.. its making me hungry just reading it!!0

Sounds delicious.
How many does this feed?
How much mince do you use as well? (per one slice of bread)0 -
250 g of mince to one slice of bread - this usually feeds 2 adults and 4 small children once its turned into meatballs! makes it quite economical as its quite filling.also can be frozen prior to baking if you end up with too many then just defrost as necessary next time. x0
