    About the xp discs...
Thank you for contacting Dell Hardware e-Support.

My name is ****** and I will be assisting you with your Dell Dimension system.
From feedback we have received from our consumer and small business customers about the amount of documentation received with systems, we have initiated the document reduction program.

In our continuous quest to improve our customer experience, we have replaced the necessary CDs with powerful and useful utilities located on the native Hard drive of the system.

By replacing the user?s manuals and CDs with electronic versions, it will
Be easier and faster to find and use these resources
Reduce the amount of paper and CDs shipped with each system
Be a positive move with regard to sustaining the environment.

Please refer to the following information for the useful utilities available on your system.

If you would like an OS CD, then this information is useful for you.

The c:\i386 directory contains the OS files found on the OS CD.
The PC restore utility will reset your system?s OS to as it left the factory.
? The OS CD image is held on the hard drive that used to create a system specific CD.
? This contains the drivers that correspond to the system it was bought on.
? These will not be present on the general OS CD that we would send to you.

If you are installing some software/hardware and are being asked for the Windows CD to install some extra Components, then this information is useful for you.

? These files now exist at c:\i386.
? You should direct the file prompt here.
? This is a much faster option than using the CD.
? And, unless removed, easier to find.

Should you want to completely re-install the OS, then this information is useful for you.

? PC Restore will ?reset? your system?s OS installation back to how it left the factory.
    ?Within 10 minutes.
? A CD kit may take from 3 to 4 days to arrive with you.

How do I run the PC Restore utility? Given below are the steps to run the PC Restore Utility

    Back Up Your Data
    *

You should back up all user data to avoid data loss prior to using Dell PC Restore.

NOTE: The most common locations for user data include the following: e-mail folders, address books in e-mail programs, My Documents folders, your Desktop, Favorites, Web browser bookmarks, and any other data that has been created by specific applications as a precaution.

Run the Dell PC Restore Utility
    *

    1. Power the computer on.
    2. When the Dell screen appears press and hold the Ctrl key on the keyboard, press the F11 key, then release them both at the same time.
The Dell PC Restore by Symantec window appears.

NOTE: Only press the keys one time, if you press them more than once you will receive a keyboard error and will have to start the process over.

    3. Click the Restore button.
A caution message appears advising that all data will be lost.
    4. Click the Confirm button.
    The progress window appears.
When the restore is complete the message The system recovery process was successful. Appears.
    5. Click the Finish button.
    The computer will restart.

Your software is now back to the way it was when you first received your computer.

    Perform Windows Updates
    *

If you performed any Windows Updates prior to reinstalling the operating system, the files are no longer installed. It is highly recommended to perform the Windows Updates to obtain security patches, fixes, and most importantly, to help protect you from unauthorized Internet attacks.

Dell?s PC Restore is a quick and easy way of returning your system to the software image it left the factory in.

WAY OF GETTING AN OS CD

If you system has a CD Burner, then the OS on drive Utility will be there
? Start -> All Programs -> Dell Accessories -> Dell OS Recovery CD.

The OS CD image is held on the hard drive that can be used to create a system specific CD.
? Contains drivers corresponding to the system it was bought with.
? Driver will not be present on the OS CD that we would send you.
? All files are removed from the Hard driver after execution.

If you fit a CD Burner, then
? The ability to use this utility becomes available to you.
? May take 2-3 boots to register with the system.

If you still want the OS CD sent out, then please understand that,
This will be a plain OS Re-installation CD.
? There will be no customer customization.

Also, Dell?s Driver Reset quickly allows you to step back to functioning drivers for your hardware.
? Driver Reset will not enable a device disabled in Device Manager.

If you still need the cds, please reply.

    Thank you for choosing Dell.

    Hi steve,

There is an update for the 17" dell monitor. If you go to windows update and choose custom (after much faffing about validating your windows OS) you will notice there is one upgrade under hardware, this is for the 17" TFT. May not help but worth a try.

    Good luck.

I did read it all :o Didn't understand it, though! And I'm still going to request the discs, so they can waffle all they like! Received an email from Dell earlier enquiring about customer satisfaction - think I'll wait until it's all wrapped up before I fill that in :D

Well - I'm amazed! Phone call today (8.45am!) as promised by Dell customer sevices, enquiring if the delivery had arrived. Told them that it had indeed, but not in the booked slot, lucky I was home, etc. She apologised profusely and offered me a free printer by way of apology! So I said "Thank you very much, appreciate that, and also could I have the XP recovery discs please?"
But it appears I have to speak to someone else about that, and they weren't available at that moment  ; however, when she rings me back tomorrow afternoon to confirm about the printer she will connect me to the Person To Ask...........

Not sure what to do with the promised printer, as DS has already bought an all-in-one to go with the new computer - is it likely to be worth anything, do you think?

Probably the one they occasionally sell off at £10 a shot. Not bad if you get it for free but you won't get a lot for it if you try to sell it on. Probably worth about £20.

Dell Customer Care rang this morning (only 5 hours earlier than arranged! ) to confirm that free printer will be delivered tomorrow between 5 and 9. Then she transferred me to Technical Support re: XP recovery disc. Hurrah! an Irish person. Very helpful, but no go on the disc being sent out. She said that Microsoft has decided not to supply discs, as it is the license that is bought??!! Proceeded to tell me how to make my own (see previous post :D ). I did argue, but to no avail, so I guess that's that then. Still, DS is very happy with his new toy, I mean machine, and I am more than happy with the price, so thanks very much all for advice etc. :A
