OK, at the risk of making myself sound totally thick and incompetent: how does one go about making a recovery disc from the software already on the machine, please? :o Just in case I have trouble getting the XP discs from Dell. Any instructions need to be of the "Open your pencil case and get out a pencil" variety!
DS is itching to put all sorts of stuff on the machine, and is reknowned for fouling things up and not being sure what he actually did!! (I'm exaggerating, but not much!), so I would be much happier if we had a way of recovering the vital things. Do I appear to have no faith in his abilities? Is that fair? Oh yes! Sorry, that was a digression.....
    Anyway, about those instructions........

If you REALLY fould up you can use Windows Restore to get back to where you were. If you REALLY REALLY foul up you can use Dell's procedure for resetting the machine back to the start - the instructions should be in the Owner's Manual which is stored as a PDF file on your machine. So if your system crashes you just turn it on and read the instructions in the manual!! DOH!! Good thinking Dell!
According to the piece of cardboard with a blue CD shaped disk picture which is in the box you can create a copy of the operating system CD by following instructions at support.dell.com/pcrt but I haven't tried that yet.

Thanks biglugs! I've just created the copy by following those instructions - very straightforward. Apparently you are only able to do that once, so let's hope a) I did it correctly; b) it's never needed! Feel a bit more relaxed now.

I'm still going to ask Dell to send me the XP recovery discs though - matter of principle. We shouldn't have to ask!

I had to reset my laptop back to the factory settings yesterday. The way to get into the the system reset tool is by pressing 'ctrl + F11' when the dell logo is on the screen.

No text flicker here using my laptop (15" TFT). Just a thought, have you searched for an update for the graphics card? May help.
  • Updated the driver via dell but its the same driver that's pre-loaded
So updated via ATI and it makes no difference.I will check out the 17inch dell tomorrow. The flicker is terrible when the text is orange on a black background

There should be a driver for the monitor itself too. A disk was supplied with my mates 17" monitor (£407 deal). Did you install that also ?
  • I can only find the user manual on the cd
