Chicken going off?

Hi,

What are the signs that chicken is going off and shouldn't be eaten?

I bought some from the halal butcher place so doesn't have a use by date.

I was going to freeze it all that day but forgot and left it in the fridge. I froze it next day but it had a slight smell to it?

Help can I still eat this chicken if not I've wasted £10!!!

  • You can tell if chicken is off - it'll smell bad and be slimy (and possibly start to turn green).

    Hmm...

Halal chickens are supposed to be brought up in a humane manner.

For a guess I'd say that this ought to mean free range and organic - but this is a guess.

Organic and free range chickens can smell a bit more "gamey" than cage or barn ones, but at the end of the day, if you're not sure about the smell, I'd be inclined to bite the bullet and bin it.

I guess it boils down to "Does it smell gamey or off?"

Wonder whether anyone can advise please??

It's £6.50's worth of Waitrose free range chicken that I bought fresh and have had in the freezer for a month. Got it out yesterday morning to defrost and it was fully defrosted when I put it into the fridge last night.

However my 3-year old is prone to turning up the controls and this morning had a very nice mothers' day surprise for me - the chicken (and most of the other things in the fridge) are frozen solid.

My instinct is telling me not to take any risks - food poisoning etc but it's such a lot of money I'd be broken hearted if I had to chuck it.

Please could anyone tell me what they would do in this situation. Thanks!!

I'll probably get my knuckles rapped/flamed for this, but I'd eat it as it's been in a cold environment all the time

EDIT ... found this info on the United States Department Of Agriculture Food Safety & Inspection Service site

    Refreezing

Meat and poultry defrosted in the refrigerator may be refrozen before or after cooking. If thawed by other methods, cook before refreezing.

I probably would - as Swan says, it's been in a cold environment all that time and as long as you cook it thoroughly at a high temp in the oven rather than slowly in a slow cooker, it should be fine.

Chicken is the worse of any meat for bacteria. Is it really worth the risk ? I'd chuck it to be honest just to be safe.
