If that happens again, undo the bag and let it air before you sniff, most chickens can whiff well just by being in the bag.

Sounds a really daft question, but how long does chicken keep for. I bought some chicken fillets from the butchers on Friday, will they be OK for tonights tea?

Simple check - smell them. If the smell is sickly sweet, then they're gone. If there is a slight hint of a fishy smell, that's a sign they're off too.

If they smell of nothing much at all, then they should be fine.

  • They should be fine but yes i would give them the smell test though it depends how they have been packaged up as i find that can sometimes make them smell odd even if they are not off, i would give them a rinse in water then smell them.

I took some frozen chicken pieces out of my freezer as I needed the room.

They'd be in there for 4 months, but I didn't want to just throw them away. So I boiled them up. The intention was to make a recipe I normally make with leftover meat, but I didn't get around to doing it and I put the chicken in the fridge overnight with no cover.

When I tried pulling the chicken apart, a lot of it was really dry, but some of it was okay.

The recipe I'm planning on using it in is to cook rice in water (obviously), but put the shredded chicken in at the same time in the water, so it heats through. I know this is normally okay, but just wondered if my hard, dry bits of chicken would stay hard and dry, or would they moisten out a bit?

 I am unsure if the chicken breasts i have are safe to eat and would appreciate some advice ?

They were frozen this morning and i got them out at about 11am and put on a plate on the worktop to defrost

They were still slighlty frozen so i popped them in the microwave till i thought they were fully defrosted

However when i cut them up there are bits of them that are still a bit icy .

Will it be ok to fry them and then put in the oven for a curry ? i dont know if it it is safe to re microwave til all the ice is gone ?

I would re microwave until entirely thawed - you may find the outside starts to cook, but don't worry - then cook thoroughly straight away.

For future reference if you're thawing and cooking the same day then place the chicken breasts in a bowl of room temp water when you take them out of the freezer (not warm or hot!!!!) - they thaw quicker like that (but still safe)

I would put them back in the microwave on the defrost setting until they are fully defrosted. You dont want them to start cooking while theyre still frozen.
