We abandoned our current account and left the overdraft to be rolled into our DMP so we had to get the new one healthy as we were working from a zero start really.

What we have done is opened a new account with First Direct and have switched over all our direct debits and DH's salary is now paid into there. Then after I am paid this month (28th) I will get my salary switched over. Some of the direct debits are to our creditors and we are going to cancel them as soon as the next payment is made - before the DMP starts.

We have decided to change our phone number too to avoid any unwanted chasing calls.

When I set my DMP up after I had got my new bank account (the only thing I had to pass a credit check for) I didn't pay anything to my creditors for a month that gave me the money I needed for my new bank account. Took about two weeks after missing a payment for any reminder letters to come then they got the token payments.

The timing has to be right for you!

i think this is great advice - im just starting a dmp with cccs and have my phone interview a week tomorrow ( i know its seems along time but ive been self emplyed since xmas and apparantly i have to have a special advisor) - anyway i have my number and ive got the letters to the creditors ready to go and ive ordered a coop basic account - all my bills are upto date so i thnk ill do as you did rayday and not pay my creditors this month and wait for the missing payments letter to come before sending a token £5 each - that way i can put all my money in the coop for a couple of weeks and let it build up ready for a possible 1/7/08 dmp payment

ive been visiting this thread for months now and reading all the adivce given here has really helped me steady my nerve and has hopefully stopped me getting into more debt to pay my debts - i for one give you all three cheers!!!!

    hip hip.................HOORAY!! :beer::beer::beer:

ps - rayday can i be a number too please

Hi guys I'm back and looking for some advice from you knowledgable folk.

Sister organising a DMP with Payplan. SHe currently had a mobile phone contract with vodafone which she's tied into for ages. Her bills are all up to date but I've recommended she goes to PAYG to try to avoif the temptation of overspending. How would she go about approaching vodafone. Have any of you found yourselves in the same boat and tried to get out of a contract?

    Advice please if possible x

    Hello everyone.

Newbies worried about timing of dmp's etc, as Rayday says just do it all in your own time and when you have it all straight in your head. Most people get paid at the end of the month and what most people tend to do, is to get that paypacket (paid into new account if poss, but mine wasn;t and I just did an internet transfer to my new account as bank weren't "suspicious" at that point ;) ) Cancel all DD's from old account and make token payments. This gives you a month or so grace, where you can save a little bit of money that you would have been using to service debts. I found this little "nestegg" really reassuring.

A little update on my situation - I have an interview tomorrow to register with the County Council for their temping positions, so hopefully something will come from that - fingers crossed.

After gloating that most creditors didn't have our phone number, Lloyds phoned DH at work yesterday:eek: ! Also had letters from them today saying that they are going to send an agent to collect my cards and cheque book (like I'm going to use them  ) and that that the debt "is obviously low priority and I have no intention of repaying it"!. I think I will have to bite the bullet and ring them tomorrow and hope that i get to speak to someone with at least half a brain.

Will repsond to Court papers from NR tomorrow - I'm going to admit claim and offer payments as per DMP - there doesn't really seem to be much point in trying to defend it, I'm not disputing that I owe the money. Really pleased that Crafting Queen had her hearing today and judge ruled against NR having a charging order - that gives me great hope.

Off to watch "How to Look Good Naked" now - it's therapy as far as I am concerned! :D

If she just cancel's DD's then the account will default eventually and be added to her other debts, and then I imagine it could be added to DMP. Or I guess if you know how many months it has to go, you can work out how much she will owe them and then tell Payplan this figure. Her credit rating is going to be shot anyway, so defaulting on a mobile phone contract shouldn't make things any worse. :D

Thanks loopylu. Can you also tell me what documents she has to provide to PayPlan. Will they need her bank statements etc?

    Good luck tomorrow Looopylou!
Just thought I would post as feeling down tonight. Payplan wrote to all my creditors about a week ago, have still heard nothing - How long do they take to respond?
Anyway, got home tonight to the dreaded post.
    1) letter from M&S, not too bad. Just saying they acknowlegde my letter and note I am with Payplan but can not doing anything until they hear from PP - at least they have acknowledge my initial letter and £1
    2) A nasty calling card from RMA on behalf on MBNA. They are sending someone round on Monday ! EEKKK!!!
Luckily hubby called them before I came home and got myself in a state. He quoted PP ref number. They seemed to accept that and said they would wait to hear from PP and cancel the man coming on Monday, however, we will still get calls and letters.
I think I am feeling a bit worried tonight as this is the first real nasty we have had so far.!!! Just thought any of you fab peeps may be able to let me know how long it takes creditors to get back? I suppose it is like 'how long is a piece of string?' Thought I would ask though.....
On another note, being really good with the pennies this weeks, have made quite a bit on Ebay and instead of thinking Yipeee will go and spend, have actually cancelled my hair appointment tomorrow !
Things must be sinking in at last !!

Well you might have to try calling a few times then ;). Lloyds were terrible with me and never responded to payplan or me despite letters sent recorded. I got the same letter as you so decided to go on the offensive with them and phoned to ask why they weren't responding. It took me 3 goes but I eventually got through to someone helpful who sorted things within 10 minutes. Just got the confirmation through so will now try and claim back the charges due to their original failure to repsond.

In my letter they claimed an Agent would turn up at home and if they failed to make contact they would attend my workplace - obviously a standard letter as they don't have my current employment details. Besides, I wouldn't handover my bank card to a stranger - It went in the dustbin in lots of pieces at the start of my DMP.

Good luck with calling them - If you get a muppet hang up and try again! But there are some helpful people there.
