I had trouble opening a bank account as was declined for a few but just received my card for Co-Op. Make sure you ask for a basic bank account no matter where you go to ensure you can open another account.

I didn't get a basic account (most of these don't give you a cheque card or a visa debit card - often just a cash card so you have to live on cash). I got a proper current account but requested no overdraft. DMP's mean you can have a cheque account, but must not get any more credit (ie overdraft).

But, if you are already suffering from bad credit rating (which I'm not sure is too likely as you are still just about meeting your payments) then you be refused a current account and may have to apply for a "basic" account with only a cash card.

  • I had (still have) a shocking credit rating, but was accepted for an Alliance & Leicester premier account, and you can request no overdraft. Also, I think if you apply online for it through Quidco you can get £50 cashback. You also get a savings account linked to your current account automatically (not that I have need for it!).
The online banking is great and really easy to use - you can set up, amend and delete standing orders really easily, and can transfer to other bank accounts at the click of a button. I'd recommend it to anyone.
Be aware though, they do charge £5 per day for "unauthorised overdrafts", so it's really important to not go even a few pennies overdrawn for any amount of time. Pre DMP I was routinely getting charged £50-£75 a month for it.

I don't work for them, by the way!

Given the amounts the banks charge us all, we're all working for them.

We both still...luckily...have a good credit rating so I would prefer a proper current account and glad that we won't be able to have an overdraft. I need the discipline! :o

    Hello Summer, and welcome :j

I've got a cheque book and no overdraft as well, as we opened a new account before the s*** hit the fan, so to speak.
Good Luck with everything, it'll be a bit mad to start with but it should settle down.
I just used to answer phone & tell them "we are setting up a DMP with CCCS and our reference number is ............" and mostly they are fine.

can't remember who you said debts are with so running off to check............

We have Northern Rock the same - they were okay and Halifax - they weren't, just keep repeating the same thing when they ring you.
( I got same girl two days in a row, cos I ask their name if they don't give it. Gave her a real shock when I said "how are you?, we spoke yesterday, same situation really, no change"

Hi everyone its been a while have been having MSE withdrawals!! without my computer whilst it went away to be fixed.
Am on a DMP and want to start making overpyaments now at the mo we dont pay any interest on any of the accounts is it better that we put it in a savings account and let it earn interest then make full and final on some of the accounts or should we just make odd payments to the accounts any ideas thanks!!

LloydsTSB are doing my head in, but you have to laugh.

Phoned them today after being given another £215 of charges/interest and 3 separate letters today and apparently they have received all contact from Payplan and myself, but they can't do anything unless the payment arrives on the same date each month!!!

Currently I pay Payplan on the 26th and Lloyds receive it on the 6th or 7th depending on whether there are 30 or 31 days in the month. Apparently if it arrives on different dates, it's not classed as a regular payment and doesn't qualify for a payment arrangement

I simply can't believe that a day matters that much, but they want to discuss it with Payplan so i'll have to call them on Monday

It really is laughable, still it's something else to complain about.

Am currently helping my sister sort out her DMP. Just in case anyone is worried about dealing with Next Directory I just wanted to say how fab they've been. Have negotiated a payment of £5 per month for the next 6 months on a balance of £1200.
