  • Thanks for replying. Gonna nip upstairs for my Worzel Gummidge creative head. I'vebeen on these boards for about 18 months now and have embraced the OS and Grocery Challenges plus Mystery shopping. I'll see what I can come up with.

loopylu, good morning. My OH is a police officer too and retires in a few years time (which is "our" debt free date, not the official one given to us by Payplan which I dare not write here, apart from the mortgage which we will have to throw money at in the future so it is clear for our "official" retirement at 65)!

I can ask his advice regarding your application but he has been a police officer for more years than I care to mention so may not know the position now (the same applies to the Military - my son is in the army - as you may be open to bribery and corruption).
It's good to know we're not the only ones. We are in exactly the same situation as you Whoopie - my OH retires at the end of next year and that is our debt free date (unofficially) - officially it is another 8 years!!! The same with our mortgage. Since he won't even be 50 when he retires so he will get another job for a few years and we will hit the mortgage with the extra income so in fact we are luckier than a lot of people and have a real light at the end of the tunnel.

We will wait and see what happens with the court thing. We are still hopeful that they might accept the increased payment offer and so no need for OH to go to court. I will keep everyone posted.
  • Tass, hello :)

I'm pretty sure all will go well with the Court and the increased offer of payment. After all, the Courts are fair to both sides and will only grant what you can actually afford to pay.

It's nice to find a "kindred spirit" so to speak. As you have said, there is light at the end of the tunnel as we can pay the debt off when our respective OH's retire (5 years for us), so we are extremely lucky. We had so many plans with the lump sum, but now the debt is the most important, so we need to clear that and basically start again. OH will also be looking for another job, so a new start all round (although it seems such a long way off still and we need to keep the creditors happy in the meantime). On the other hand, I do not want us wishing the next 5 years of our life away!

Keep us posted regarding the Court matter. I'm sure it will work out okay.

    :)

I have no idea what I'm talking about!
  • I'm back. Just spent the best part of 3 hours finding paperwork, converting weekly items into monthly expenditure etc., and it doesn't look too good. Once I had the paperwork in front of me I decided to go on CCCS Debt Remedy and it seems there is a shortfall per month approx £500:eek: with a remark saying we are unable to help you as you have nothing to offer your creditors. This is not what I wanted to hear. Can't wait until wed morning now so I can have my interview and see what the next step is. Surely my creditors would be happy to accept £1 and the debt not end up being wiped out through BR!!!!

I've accepted, after many years of digging heels in, that I may now have to go BR. I only have 2 worthy assets - my Subaru Forester which we got at a bargain price of £3500 instead of £6k and my leather corner suite which we are halfway through paying off. The Subaru can go realistically as it is a gas guzzler at £70 per week, but after years of throwing away 100's of pounds on a battered P reg Renault just to make it go, the Subaru was a luxury, yet reliable investment to save on the many trips to the mechanic which we were regularly doing.

The sofa on the other hand is my one true luxury. After getting divorced in 2000, I bought a cheapo, off-the-back-of-a-lorry sofa which after 2 weeks, broke and I then spent 6 years on it, with it being propped up by a reebok step and scatter cushions underneath the bl00dy thing. If the sofa went, God knows how I'd explain this to my mother when she comes to stay. I could lie and say it was torn and it has gone back to the manufacturer who offered me another one and I decided to err on the side of caution and say "no thank you, it may happen again".

Oh how I wish I could see into the future today......

AAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH - sorry folks, rant over.

    Hi TMD,

Sorry to hear you are having such a rubbish start to the day. Perhaps you could post your I&E on here so we could have a look at it? I know it's personal, but it's also anonymous and several of us have done it and found lots of areas to save. Just an idea.

I was randomly surfing the web last night and found another forum to do with IVA & BR. There was a post fro a woman asking if she had to sell her sofa (small world!). The consultant answered no, as household furnishings weren't include in the asset breakdown. Now that's only from a random website, so don't take it as gospel, but it might be a ray of hope. Trying doing some research on Google maybe?

    Afternoon Everyone:hello:

Welcome aboard to all our new friends, this thread has certainly been busy over the last couple of days!

Hope you are all well and not too stressed. Had loads of snow here this morning and it was completely white outside when I woke up. The car was all packed up to do a carboot this morning but went back to bed instead:D

Received a letter from CO OP bank yesterday saying my arrangement with them had now ended:eek: I rang them up immediately (something I would never have done a year ago) and explained that I was in the process of doing my yearly review with CCCS. The lady was really helpful and said that she would extend the agreement for another two months to give me time to put the review into action - result!!!!:T

    Take Care

    Hello my lovely!

Good news about the Co-Op. They seem to be a friendly bunch, eh? I don't blame you choosing bed over car boot this morning! I need to do another one of those soon, but don't have much junk left. Maybe cos I'm not wasting my money on junk anymore! I need to reduce my Challenge pot cos needed to pay my tyre out of it, but that's okay I guess.

Enjoy the snow & speak soon,

Sorry GirlRacer no dealings with Welcome so can't help I'm afraid. Hopefully someone will come along who can!

Hiya Smiley:hello: How are you? Just had another snow shower about ten minutes ago! I lurrrrrrrrve snow!!!

I know what you mean about having nothing left to get rid of, but I'm quite lucky I have two SIL's who love to shop and they give me their cast offs (no good to me 'cause my leg is larger than their whole bodies put together!!) they know I carboot them and are quite happy for me to make money out of their hobby:D

I was really quite surprised at how pro-active I have become over the past year. At one time a letter from the bank I owe thousands to would have sent me into meltdown. Onwards and upwards hey!!

Hope all is well with your car now you have fixed the tyre I doubt if I will be able to add to my F&F pot for the next few weeks, but at least we are trying and thats the main thing!

    Take Care pumpkin!

    Hi all, its me again.
I felt a little calmer after I read peoples reponses earlier, but now its getting to that time when the butterflies are back and I feel bad again.

I'm thinking about what my bank is going to do when they find out about me hopefully getting a DMP. I have a personal loan with them and an overdraft. Will they close it all down? All of my direct debits come out of this account as my wage is paid in. Will I need to get a new bank account?

One thing that really gets to me is the fact that the bank manager has always been so nice and has been my manager since I was 16, i'm now 29. I have to keep saying to myself that her being nice is a front to get my business, which has worked. I need to toughen up, but when it comes to money i dont know where to start. I've wasted every penny i've every earned (thats how it feels).

Any advice on how I can toughen up?
