It can't be the unknown device as that's there all the time whether it's plugged in or not.

As you look down the list in Device manager, you may see Portable Devicesin there. Don't worry if you don't, that just means the computer isn't picking any up. Same with Mass Storage.

Right thanks nothing changes at all when plugging in or unplugging the cable from portable devices though saying that it does sort of load and refresh but i counted everything in both and the numbers stay the same.

The battery much be some king internal thing as there isn't one to replace especially as it's so small.

that would suggest that there is nothing wrong with your pc or vista but the ipod shuffle is obviously faulty...:D
